Todays San Jose Mercury lists a dolby digital/DTS player with 180 watt radio tuner including 5 speakers and subwoofer for $229.00. It gives the model number as a DV1100. Does anyone know who this is manufactured by and if it is a hot deal?

Looks like a good starter home theatre system, the DVD even plays VCDs and SVCDs.

i am looking for a DVD system too. i have been eyeing the sony
DAV-S300 sony 5.1 system which is for $349 at frys. i
liked the sound of is the panasonic SC-HT10 better. but it
is priced at $450-499. the panasonic SC-HT290D is cool too (more
power than the HT10).

I own the DAV-S300 from Sony, and I really is a great machine (for what it is). One thing that immediately puts the s300 on top of the DV1100 is the fact that the S300 has optical in (perfect for directv). Also, it sounds as if the DV1100 does not actually play DTS, but has an optical out that carries the DTS signal. (Making the machine an overglorified DVD player that still needs a 5.1 sound system to go with if you want DTS.) Other than that it looks decent.

I just got back from Frys and looked at this DV 1100. It looks okay. I saw another home theater system which was called Lasonic for $149.00. It was a DVD player with small speakers and a small subwoofer. It appears to have a separate amplifier unit. I couldn't get any information. You know how hard it is to find a competent person at Frys.
