DVD help

Hey guys, I just have a few questions about some DVD's that I thought someone might be able to help me with...

I have quite a few DVD's that are Disney ones for my daughter....In Mulan, when I choose play from the main menu, I get an option to play the widescreen or normal version, and if I choose widescreen, it works...the top and bottom of the screen are blacked out, etc, etc..

However, for Toy Story 2, this same menu option seems to have no impact on how the movie looks....is the menu option bogus or do I need to change some sort of setting on my DVD player?

Shrek, DVD#2, is supposed to be widescreen as well, but looks the same as DVD#1...

Also, what exactly is anamorphic widescreen?

Thanks...

you misunderstand my question...I know how widescreen is supposed to look on a normal TV, with the black bars at the top and bottom, and since I have a 55" TV, I don't mind....

What I am trying to figure out is why it doesn't seem to work with all my DVD's, like Toy Story 2 and Shrek...

toy story 2 and sherk are both computer generated movies, the rerendered the movie for full frame and widescreen so the audience wouldnt loose anything by watching one or the other, this isnt possible for non cgi movies, arent computers cool? you can be a cool dad and explain this to your daughter 😀

All the Toy Story 2 dvd's i've seen are 1.78:1 and not pan&scan? Do you have the single disc release, the toy story 1 and 2 pack, or the ultimate toybox?

As for Shrek, that's very strange. On disc 2 when you play it does the picture look distorted (too tall) at all? maybe its your dvd player or TV stretching the picture to fill the screen

ananmorphic has double the horizantal resolution so if you enlarge the image it looks as good as the unenlarged version.

thanks guys, that explains that!

Does anamorphic only look better on an HDTV then?

I went for a 55" projection over a 36" digital two years ago.....next TV will be digital though!

make sure your next tv is HD not just digital and make sure it supports 480p,720p, and 1080i

i would say your descion two years ago was a good choice.
