My TV has component inputs and I have a 9700Pro video card in my PC. Let's say I want to play DVD from my PC to my Home theater using this card. WOuld I be best getting the ATI Component video cables or would a regular DVD player offer better performance?

I found that although text and graphics looks awful on your tv. playing a dvd from your pc connected to the tv looks really good. ive tried from both component and s-video out.

o, btw. your 3dmarks score could use a little more tweaking. ;)

so would it be worth it to get the component adapter? ATI is the only place that sells one for my card and it's $30 and they charge a boatload for shipping...a little cable is $15 for standard shipping!

would I just be better sticking with a regular DVD drive?

and my new 3dmark score is here

If you already have a stand-alone DVD player with compnent video outputs then you wouldn't gain anything by using the computer to watch DVD's.

Actually, a stand-alond player is much more convenient to use.

wow that is crappy. I'm getting around 11.5k with my p4 2.53 + reference ti4600. That 9700 should blow my setup away.

No, it's a waste of $30 for you right now, unless you have an HDTV. The big selling point on that adapter is it's ability to output at HDTV resolutions (480p,720p,1080i). In the case of a standard TV, it's still going to output at 480i which is the same resolution as S-video and composite video connections. About the only thing you will gain from this adapter is slightly better color seperation, but it will not be noticably better than your current S-Video setup.

If you are talking about an svideo to composite adapter you can buy one at Radio Shack for around $20. I bought one for my ati tv wonder there and it worked fine for me.

Moot point... you need a progressive scan TV (i.e. HD) to use progressive resolutions. Output a progressive signal to a Standard TV and all you will get is a nice garbled color show.

He is talking component, not composite. Composite conections sit at the bottom of the food chain...

Worst to best...

RHF/UHF
composite
s-video
Component (Standard Def)
Component (HDTV)

cmdrdredd,

i think you should stick with what you already have and not waste your money on the component adapter from ati. use the s-video connection or buy a progressive scan dvd player if your tv supports it. but if you have a buttload of cash burning thru your wallet. then go ahead :)

well, it would be cheaper to get ATI's cables if it supported progressive scan. Buying a progressive scan DVD player is at least $100

It is moot if your not using an HDTV. You asked a question, & I answered it based on the info you gave.

"My TV has component inputs"

This is all the info you gave on your TV. Having component inputs does not make your TV HD capible.

I'll repeat myself one more time... If you have a Standard TV with component inputs, you are wasting your time and $ on the ATI component adapter/cables, as there will be little advantage over S-video. If you have an HDTV, then by all means get the ATI component adapter/cables.

If your TV supports one of the progressive scan modes (480p, 720p), I would imagine you'd be able to get a progressive image from that component adapter. I think I read somewhere it has a switch you can set to output the different resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i). But that's just my best guess... lemme know how it works out for you. I've been wanting to get a 8500 and that component adapter to hook up to my 43" HD ready Toshiba to see if it improves my Divx movies.

No plain English and learning how to ask the question right the 1st time will do...

I can't stress this enough... Having a high-school equivalent comprehension of the English language will make your life and the life of those around you much easier.
