Hi ,

Im currently running an AMD 64 X2 3800+ , but i dont play games i only use my PC for DVD Encoding and Burning .

I always heard that Intel was the better CPU for that type of work .

In the past i played a lot of games thats why i went with AMD .

I've not bought an Intel CPU before , and was just wondering is there anyone out there with 1 thats around £200/$350 .

Could you tell me what it performs like ?

I was looking at these 2 :-

1 x Intel Xeon 3.2GHz FA 800MHz 2MB cache Nocona CPU Retail @ £229

1 x Intel Pentium 4 950 Dual Core "LGA775 Presler" 3.4GHz (800FSB) @ £229

1 x Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4 GHz ( 800 MHz ) - LGA775 Socket - L2 2 MB - Box (BTX Type I) @ £207

Is this right ??

Intel Pentium® 4 D 940 Dual core 2x3.2GHz 800FSB LGA775 2x2MB cache @ £168

Intel Pentium® 4 D 830 Dual core 2x3.0GHz 800FSB LGA775 2x1MB cache @ £192

Why is the 2x3.2GHz/2x2MB cheaper than the 2 x 3.0GHz2x1MB cpu ?

why not try overclocking your x2. i think most hit 2.4-2.5 easy. some even 2.6-2.7 GHz. also hold out till core 2 (conroe) if you can.

The X2 3800 is no slouch when it comes to DVD encoding either, even at its stock speeds. Of the chips you listed though, The PD 940 and 950, the Presler core chips will be the fastest. Not sure how much faster than your X2 3800, probably not enough to justify buying one at the moment though.

I also have to question the value of upgrading simply for DVD encoding as your cpu should do a decent enough job.

With cpus all at stock speed this is probably correct...however if you just OC the 3800+ most modestly will hit 2.4ghz and then it beats all those chips at stock....If you invest in some vcore boost and possibly a higher quality hsf you may hit 2.6ghz+ and then even those 9xx series chips are going to have to get close to 4ghz to compete...

OC what you have and save for Conroe...

Ive never had an Intel CPU , so i didnt really know how it would compare to my X2 3800.

I just always heard that Intel CPU's are way faster at Encoding and AMD are better for Gaming.

Everytime i overclock my X2 3800 the " PWMIC " temp goes up like a rocket.
[ DFI LP NF4 SLi-DR ]

Ive tried overclocking with the vDimm lower , but i think i might just get a heatsink .

Anyway thanks for the advice its been very helpful , after reading this i think id be better to just wait a little while for the Conroe or get an AM2 chip.

That was true in the days of northwood vs. Atlhon XP and higher clocked prescotts vs. A64, but when it comes to the dual cores, the X2's/Opty's take the cake. My X2 spanks my pentium-d's by far in video encoding. Especialy when you bring overclocking in to the picture. At stock speeds, the 950 will be pretty evenly matched with your X2. When you take overclocking in to the picture, you need an expensive motherboard and good power supply to get the pentium-d to overclock to the same performance levles as the X2.

Thanks for all the info ... im overclocking my X2 just now to compare some of the benchmarks with zanejohnsons presler benchmarks .

Heres the results @ 2.5GHz , i had to run the mem really low . Something about GeIL RAM and the LanParty NF4 SLi-DR just dont agree .

btw : Thanks for the benches zane .

EDIT:

I ended up running on these settings , because my system runs 24/7 and about 50% its not working hard .

Current Setup

9 x 260 @ 2340 MHz - 1.472 vCore - HTT x4 -
Memory @ 9-5-5-2.5 Freq @ 212MHz
Temps @ Idle 26°C/30°C
Temps @ Load 36°C/45°C

So far its only 1 hour Prime95 Srable , but @ 2.5 / 2.6GHz Prime would only run for a fedw minutes , so this seems ok .

i had Geil Ram in one of my X2 ssytems before. its fine as long as you dont clock it. the value stuff doesnt seem to like it. ballistix on the other hand kept right up with my attempts. had it upto 290mhz without missing a beat. wish crucial had made those sticks more stable :(

p.s. phpdog, i'd run prime for longer than an hour. its annoying and so on, but i've found that i've run prime for 6 hrs and when playing a game like BF2 that i'll get some error and the sys would crash. after a little more tweaking, i've had my 3800+ X2 24hr prime stable and no probs with games/encoding etc. previously it would crap out at some point with varying errors (which is annoying when you have an hour left of an encode that has taken 2 days plus to do!)

Definately Intel for an encoding rig. I was using an OCd 3200+ running at 2.4 Ghz for a long while but decided to give the 805 Pen-D a try since it was so cheap and I'm glad I did. You can easily OC it to 3.4-3.6 Ghz on air and it cut my encoding times in half. Didnt have to buy new ram or a fancy mobo either. The Asus p5p800 mobo supports this cpu and its dirt cheap so I got to resuse my ram and my old agp card.

I am sorry but thios response was quite lame!! You are comaring a single core chip to a dual chip of Intel?? Hahaha LMFAO....Can I say DUHHHHHHH....

The fact is if he can get his 3800+ stable at 2.6ghz you will need an 805d doing 4ghz to beat it....Go with Stevty on this one and just OC the best you can now and wait for conroe...

WTF? Please stop with the personal attacks, they are unnecesary and unwelcome. You need a vacation to calm down and reflect on your bad attitude.

bring it on...I see your flame post IE polls all the time...I have never seen you recommend an AMD even over the last year when they are currently the leader...Yet you think anything I said was wrong????

It is dead on....Even the intel users here know you offer little to nothing to this forum except flame bait

Truths...

1) no one listens to you

2) you are a known to troll and cause flame wars

3) you are wrong far more then you are right

I am guilty of telling it like it is.....Bring on my vacation!!! Where am I going? MTV beachhouse?

This is not good for for CPU Processors and Overclocking. Personal vendettas are not welcome here.

FelixDeKat, i have never seen a single post by you in this sub-forum that is not trollish or fanboi-ish.

IOW, your contributions have been entirely unwelcome & FUD-filled.

Duvie is tired of your BS, as we all are.

He's not an AMD fanboi either; if you remember back, he used to run P4s & was a big advocate of the benefits of HT when that came out.

Im sure many of your posts could be portrayed as "trollish, entirely unwelcome & FUD-filled" by anyone who disagrees with you.

Dont think you or anyone else has a monopoly on this judgement.

Duvie is clearly trolling me in the worst way, and I can point out at least 50 threads where he does this over and over again. But you choose to ignore them - fine by me.

But that also denotes your underlying demeanor and motivation and disqaulifies you entirely from giving an unbiased opinion. Your opinion is quite biased!

If you've got a 3800X2 @ 2.4Ghz (or higher) that's the same as a 4600X2 (with slower RAM because of the divider perhaps).

Comparing a 4600X2 to a 940 from THG's cpu charts.

Clone DVD : 9.41 to 12.10
DivX6 : 4.41 to 5.13
Media encoding thingamy: 1.36 to 1.51

Of course this is comparing an OC'd chip to one running stock, which isn't fair, but it's also comparing a chip you have to one you might buy instead. If you overclocked a 930 or 940 it would probably equal or better your current chip, but not by much and the cost would be quite noticable. (It takes the 965 to meet or beat the 4600X2 and in clone DVD nothing Intel has on that chart can touch it)

Sidegrading (credit for term due to someone else) is not the answer.
