DVD editing software?

Does anyone have any good, easy to use DVD editing software to recommend?

I had bought one of those standalone VHS to DVD recorders but returned it because it didn't produce DVDs that were widely compatible with various players.

I do have hardware on my PC with which to record an input stream from a VCR, just need a lead on some decent software to work with.

What I did when I converted mine from vhs was to use the trial version of Pinnacle Studio 9. It gave my 30 days to try it out. Beat buying something. Also there is a free program but cannot recall the name it (vhs something) was small and hard to setup.
