DVD driver installed is wrong

In short, a customer installed XP home on a Dell XPS M1330 notebook (comes w/ vista). Everything works except the DVD drive. At first, when we would remove it from device manager, and redetect, the correct driver would install (Matshita) however, every reboot resulted in it defaulting to a SCSI CDROM device.

Now we cannot get the correct device installed at all. Has anyone come across this? Is there a fix besides blowing up the XP install?

check the firmware, may have to reflash it with the right firmware, or the user did not install the right chipset drivers or not all of them and may be the reason for it reverting upon reboot.
