DVD drive will open/close but not play?

Hi guys,

For some reason my DVD drive won't play DVD's. It will open and close okay, so that means it is connected to the motherboard and there is power going into it?

However, when I go to Computer (Win 7) and double click the drive it says, 'Please insert a disk', even though there is one already there.

I think some time ago I may have tinkered with the registry in order to stop it autoruning and that may be the issue, but I can't be certain.

I have tried making some changes recommended via a google search such as going to Autorun in Control Panel but that didn't work!

Any ideas?

I suppose you could go to Device Manager, uninstall the DvD Hardware, reboot (reinstalls the DvD hardware) and see if that that corrects the issue (hopefully corrects any issue in the registry).

With my IDE based DvD RW drives, sometimes I have to uninstall the IDE Controller that the drive is connected to, then reboot in order to get things working properly again. However, I think that may involve an issue unique to MS/Intel based IDE (versus SATA) controllers when used with CD/DvD drives.

If re-flashing (google drive model firmware) doesn't help, then there is a physical problem with the said drive. Replace.

DVD drives can also play CDs. For that reason, they have two lasers, one for each format. It is very possible that one of them , i.e., the DVD one is not performing. Did you try a CD to see if the other one reads?

Opticals seem to have a life of 4-5 years - less if there is smoking around them. I would replace the drive as Magic Carpet suggests.

Looks like your dvd drive died. It happened to one of my old dvd burners, it would open and close but couldn't read/burn any disks.

Does your CDROM have a small reset button stick needle in and let us know take safety pin and push into that hole and hold it wait 10 seconds then your done....

The small hole is located on right hand side usually. If this doesn't work you need to RMA ,, gl

That hole (if you are talking about the one on the front of the drive) is used to eject the tray when it either gets stuck or you don't have any power to it. It's not a reset button.

Holy crap that made me laugh out loud. (the post you responded to).
"Reset button", "wait 10 seconds". LOL!
He must have RMA'd so many drives...
And he wonders why nobody listens to him.

My CD laser went flaky and died a while back, while the DVD one was perfectly fine. I got a new drive for $13, free shipping.

When you push in a safety pin and the cd drive pops out was it not obvious what it did?

Thanks guys, its working now! The Sata cable wasn't fully connected to the drive. I only opened the case as a last resort as I assumed all was fine because the drive was opening and closing! Strange huh?

Interesting to hear that. Normally what you described originally points to one or both the optical heads failing (necessitating replacement of the entire optical drive).

Didn't know a loose SATA cable could have caused this. Learn something new every day. :)

When you are wrong (which is more often than not) you should be (and hopefully are) called out on it. It is not a jealousy issue, nor are we looking for confirmation of our manhood.
This is a twofold solution. It is done to try to get you to think about what you are posting before posting it, whether it is correct or not, and secondly to inform those looking for correct answers that this is not one of them.
I'm still baffled that you truly thought that sticking a pin in that little hole and holding it for however many seconds was some kind of "reset"switch. Where did you learn of this? I really do want to know.

It usually is just a part failure, and they are so cheap that I usually have a few brand new ones in my parts box.
Maybe I'll just invest in a box of safety pins next time.

Why would someone be jealous over a Q6600 rig?
