Hello,
I am in a big dilemma. I want to buy a DVD drive, but I read that only some of the drives that are now in the market can read "Type 2 media". Are Type 2 media the same as DVD RAM or...? Does this mean that eg Pioneer (which aren't in the list below) can't read DVDs that have been written in a DVD-R-RW-RAM? I just want to be sure that the DVD drive that I'll get will be able to read every disc now and in the future.

You can check out Pioneer's specs here. I have two DVD-106S drives and have yet to find a disk they can't read.

Thanks.
The Pioneer 106S and 116 (perhaps more models too) can read : "single and dual layer DVD-ROM/Video, DVD-R/RW, CD-ROM, Audio CDs, CD-R/RW, Video CDs, Photo CDs, Hybrid CDs, CD-Extra (CD-Plus) and CD-Text Discs"

Does this include Type 2 Media? This is my question

Yes. If the DVD drive can read CDRWs, that is classed as a Type 2 compliant drive.

The original generation of DVD drives had real problems reading CDRs, and were not capable of reading CDRWs.

This has nothing to do with DVD-RAM/DVD-RW/DVD+RW.
