DVD Drive Speed

I am about to purchase a CD-RW drive and noticed a Toshiba model that writes / rewrites CD's and also plays DVD's at 4.8X speed. I noticed that pure DVD players start at 8X. Is there a noticable difference in the quality of DVD's played at 4X as opposed to 8X ? It would be nice to buy just one drive and have it all!

Take care,

What model?
It might help more if we knew what specs you are trying to match against.

Also, you shouldn't assume that all DVD players start at 8x, that
multiplier might have different meanings depending on how the
drive is marketed. Single speed DVD is supposed to be equivalent to
8 times single speed CD performance. But there are multipliers for
DVD as well - so that 4.8x might be faster than you think.

Single Speed DVD is actually 9x single speed CD for raw transfer rate

But it's a different media so it doens't really count.

If you want a CDRW+DVD I'd check out the Ricoh MP9120A

12x Write, 10x ReWrite with JustLink (like burnproof)

32x CD Read, it's got access times that match or beat any 32x reader out there.

8x DVD Read.

Excellent drive if you want a combo!

As for DVD read speed, it's not really important, for watching movies you use 1x (whether your DVDRom is 1x, 4x, 8x, or 16x you use 1x when watching movies), and there are very few DVD data discs.

True Noriaki. The only speed difference ive notice on various DVD speeds is how long it takes the player to realize what type of disk is in it, DVD, Audio or data. The faster the player is rated, the faster it will make the distinction.

My DVD drive goes really slowly according to DVD Speed 2000. It's an Afreey 10X drive (with I haven't been able to update the firmware on for some reason). It is stuck at like 1.17x! Any tips on this one? Could it be that it's stuck in PIOI mode?

Just to add, when DVD movies are watched the drive runs at 1x anyways, or so I hear.

Yeah I know it goes at ~1x, but if you are ripping DVDs, then it is nice to have a faster drive.
