Hey
I just built my new system, and at the last minute decided to throw in a DL DVD-RW. I chose the Liteon mentioned.
Well, I installed it and tried to play a DVD with PowerDVD. It played for a second, then it sort of stuttered, then it froze. Then, 30 seconds later, a frame or two would play. I ejected the disk and force-quitted PowerDVD thinking "WTH, why is this happening." Then I tried to install Mafia. The auto play took about a minute to appear, and the install would start, but freeze at about 5%.

I checked my IDE settings, and it would have a little message that said "The transfer speed of this device has been turned down because of excessive transfer errors" or something along those lines. Windows resets the transfer speed to PIO. This does not happen with my LG CDRW that is on the same cable and channel. I tried all different configurations of IDE Cables, different channels, only one drive, etc and none of them worked.

Then i decided to uninstall the Nforce IDE driver, and lo and behold, i wasnt getting these problems anymore!
I figured "well, since i flashed my DVD writer's firmware after i installed the Nforce driver, maybe ill just re-install the nforce drivers!"
Well, i just did that...no go. It still stutters HORRIBLY on DVDs, and the image looks sort of garbled.

My computer works perfectly fine in every other aspect. What should i do? is there a performance hit or anything if i leave the Nforce IDE drivers uninstalled?

Thank you VERY MUCH, i really hope to sove this issue
Nick

EDIT: I just uninstalled the Nfocre IDE drivers again, and its totally fixed. I can play DVD's flawlessly, and write them also.
WHY does this happen?!?! Is there something i dont know?

Well, WindowsXP does indeed look for errors during data transfer from the drives. If it detects too many, it will drop out of UDMA mode. When you uninstall, and reinstall the Nforce drivers, you are resetting XP's error counter.

You seem to have changed the cables enough to rule them out.

Have you tried uninstalling the IDE controller and letting Windows redetect it? This is the usual cure for this problem. I don't know if uninstalling the drivers has the same effect or not.

Are you using the latest Forceware drivers?

If the drive also gave errors in another computer, I'd have to conclude that it's the drive at this point.

Yes, thats the fix im using right now. I uninstalled the Nforce IDE drivers, and i'm using the Windows ones. I'm just wondering why my drive would have excessive transfer errors with the Nforce drivers installed

The Nforce IDe drivers are just plain bad... my friend could probably explain the exact reasons better, but suffice it to say that it is the only major flaw that I have found with the Nforce 2 Chipset....

Agreed. With nVidia's IDE drivers, when I tried to burn a CD, my CPU utilization was almost 90% - and every few seconds, the computer would just lock for a little bit. I'm staying away from those drivers until (if ever) they fix/rewrite them.

I had a very similar problem. Check out this link - it seems to have fixed my problem. Just make sure you don't play any bad movies or you'll have to repeat the process. ;)

Oh, and mine still stuttered at first, but after a minute or so it started going full-tilt.

Yes, the exact same thing happens to me with the Windows IDE drivers. I get like 1 5sec stutter, then I can fast-foreward through the whole movie with no stutters. Wow, Nvidia has been pissing me off ALOT lately...look in the Video forum at my SLi find. Link
Thanks for your replies guys, now I know i'm not doing anything wrong, and that my drive dosnt need to be RMA'ed.

I saw it suggested, but I didn't see feedback if it was tried or not - did you try swapping the cable for one you knew to be good?

Also, in Device Manager, (maybe you did it this way anyway) just try outright removing the IDE controller(s) and letting Windows redetect them.

And, one final option that I can think of:
Updated firmware.
Just be very sure to get the right one, and to follow the instructions exactly; I think you must have no disc in the drive when flashing. Improper flashing can disable your drive.
Also, the site doesn't work with Firefox, in case you use that; you need to use IE.:(
If this is the case, be sure to get the handy IEView extension.

Yeah, I did all of the things you suggested. I already had the latest firmware, and right now I'm using the Windows IDE controller.
Thanks for that IEView extension, its nifty ;)
