Samsung DVD Sd-612 dvd rom drive.

drive plays cds / data CDs but doesnt recognize dvd disks.

any ideas what is wrong or what i should do to fix this?

Could be the dvd laser died. How old is the unit? If it's a bad laser then replacing the drive is the only thing to do.
 
drive is old, but i havent tried to use it in years. does windows xp automatically detect dvd lasers?
