DVD Drive Firmware Update Problem

Hello!

I am trying to update the firmware on my newly purchased Optorite 0203 multiformat DVD writer drive. I downloaded DV2_216.zip from the optorite website and unzipped it. When I open DV2Flash.exe, I get an error dialog that says: "Open I/O driver error!!" After I select the DV2_216 file and hit ok, I get the following message: "Send data to device error." and the result is that I cannot update the firmware.

I also get an I/O error when I try to use this drive with DVD decryptor. Along with "IFO Parsing Failed, I get an error dialog that says:

--------------------------
I/O Error!
CDB: (long string of numbers)
Interpretation: Read (10) - Sectors 5849-5880

Reason: The parameter is incorrect.

Abort, Retry, Fail
---------------------------

I'm sure the two problems are related, but I have no idea what to do about this I/O error. I have a Lite-On CD-RW as Master, and this Optorite as Slave, if that makes any difference. And yes, the jumpers are set correctly.

Oh - I heard it was really crappy so I didn't install any of the software that came with this drive - the Sonic MyDVD or BHA Recorder. Is there some sort of driver on those discs that I need?

I'd really appreciate any insight! Thanks!

First try disabling (untoggling) DMA for the Optorite drive (Device Manager Properties). Restart, then try flashing again.

If no worky, disconnect the Lite-On from the system, jumper the Optorite as Master and give it another whirl.

bacillus - according to Optorites website, this update can be done in Windows.

tcsenter - I can't find where to change the DMA mode in device manager properties (Win 2k). However, my IDEtool shows the Opto in "Multiword DMA mode 2." The only non-DMA setting available seems to be PIO mode 4. Is this what you are suggesting that I change it to, then retry?

Thanks!

The Sony DRU DVD burners require you to uninstall all packet writing software prior to firmware upgrades. Could this be required for the Optorites as well?

tcsenter - THANK YOU!!! That did the trick. Changed it to PIO, and updating worked just fine.

Anyone care to explain WHY this worked? What is it about DMA mode that precludes updating the firmware?
