dvd drive can't play audio cds

I have a Pioneer DVD-115 dvdrom that was working, which i have already flashed once (2 months ago). everything was cool, then i noticed another firmware upgrade. so i successfully flash it again (bios recognizes firmware change, and the flash program itself says success). but problem now is that when i try to play an audio cd, all i get is a constant grating, like a saw or something. ive tried a number of older cds, so its not a copy protection issue. funny thing is i can play MP#s with winamp off of a cd that i burned last year, just the .cda files dont play. i have winxp, and have enabled/disabled "digital audio" in device manager. any ideas?

If you can, reflash the firmware to what worked. It is just possible that the last firmware update added a scheme to prevent playing audio CDs. You can't trust anyone these days. Never flash what works!

HappyPuppy: i felt lucky (glutton for punishment) since my last BIOS update for the ECS K7S5a was both important and successful. any other ideas?

This is simple, to play audio cd's on your cd drive you must have a special cord connected from your cd drive (or dvd) to your soundcard. I think these cords come with cd drives and soundcards.

They come also in two forms, one digital and one analog, the analog ones have big heads while the digital ones have smaller heads.

you don't have to have a cord to play audio cds, my bro plays them with same soundcard without one in winxp. it goes thru the ide bus.

I had this set up on a couple of my systems. It never worked right. After a few days of it working on and off I just installed the cables and haven't had a problem since.

ok, i will look into this, tcrosson. sorry for doubting you Czar.

can someone help me out and find a nice quality one for me? i don't really know what i am looking for, have no access to B&M stores. i have a Phillips Acoustic Edge, if that helps.
