DVD Decoder for Vista?

Anyone have a DVD Decoder that works in Windows Vista?

I have tried PowerDVD 5.7 which came with my PC but it will not install, and have read of other folks having issues.

Anyone know of one which does work?

 
The one that's included in the system, presuming that you're running the 32-bit version and not running Home Basic or Business. Otherwise, not really sure.
 
You might try VLC aka VideoLan Media Player. It plays DVDs just fine on XP, and it's free so what does it hurt to try?
 
If you are running Home Premium or Ultimate you don't need one. Media Center comes with one built in.
 
Nero 7 should work on vista (the newest update works) and it does (assuming it has the showtime) a DVD Decoder. but Shawn is correct. unless you have the basic edition (i doubt it) Vista comes with a DVD Decoder.
 
I am given to understand that WMP 11 will be part of Vista, and it plays DVD movies just fine for me. I imagine PowerDVD 7 will work as well.
 
I am using Enterprise edition

When WMP 11 tries to play a DVD it says decoder not installed.

I tried installing VLC, it brings up the DVD menu, but then only plays the sound, no video....
 
the nVidia decoder works great.


I was actually having some DVD-menu issues under XP but under Vista it's perfect.

There is a 30 day demo if you want to try first and be sure.

There's no built in decoder in Enterprise, only Home Premium and Ultimate IIRC.

to get vlc to work:

click settings, preferences, check the advanced options button.

click on video, output modules, cloose Windows GDI video output.


 
Vista has the MPEG2 codec and therefore can play standard DVDs. Vista has to have that codec to support the new DVD Video feature. You can now use Windows Movie Maker to edit video and then export it to the new DVD writer app. The automagic mode will create motion backgrounds of the video on main, and motion picon chapter points. Really cool and easy enough for a grandma to use (well, except for the part of plugging that 4 pin firewire cable into that tiny port without her bifocals.)
 
i use dscaler mpeg2 codecs and windows media player. work flawlessly. In vista i just use the defaults (Ultimate) but give the dscaler ones a try as well for vistas that dont have them.

I also downloaded the NVIDIA decoder, which seems to work well.....now I just have to decide if its worth shelling out $20 for.

Yes it is. Best decoder out there bar none.
 
I just uninstalled the trial DVD players I had messed with this weekend, and kept Media Player Classic, as refrenced above. It works perfect. All I did was place the program on my C: drive and associated DVD *.IFO files and *.Vob files with this program. Just right mouse click on these files and choos to open with this program, which you might have to browse and find. This is a big relief. All weekend I have been fighting rundll32 errors, associated with trying to get DVD files to play without investing in an expensive program. Also, some of the programs turned off Aero, which isn't the end of the world, but it was annoying.

A bonus, at least in my opinion, is that I can capture still frames of DVD with the simple "print screen" key on my keyboard. Other fancy DVD players in the past would not allow this, probably related to overlay. Maybe this is a benefit of the new graphical Aero interface, or the way this particular player displays DVD. Either way, the DVD looks great with this free player.
