What im looking for: TV tuner, PVR, FM tuner, analog to digital conversion, good software bundle, video editing abilities. The top end consumer product will most likely satisfy my needs. However I will consider professional quality products. I will be using pvr every day. Most definatly be backing up alot of vhs to dvd.
I hope to do some mild dvd creation as well.

Will this do everything I ask? What is the next step up and how much would it cost?

Hauppauge Win TV PVR 350 / PCI Hardware DVD Encoder with TV Tuner, S-Video Input and Output

Thanks

I would not get the 350, do you need mpeg decoding? Sounds like you want an All-in-wonder type board, or just get a 250 and a seperate FM tuner.

For $189.00 at newegg I can grab: Hauppauge PCI Video Recorder, TV/FM Tuner Card, Model "WinTV PVR 350" -REATIL

If its a little overkill it won't hurt anything im only concerned about not having enough options later. Thanks for the imput Todd.

The 350 cost more because it outputs video, but only the decoded mpeg, not windows. It also has issues with DVR software. The 250 is the workhorse for DVR and it can also capture, but I never tried it.

With specific DVR software? The 250 does not have issues with DVR software? How is the software bundle that comes with the 250?

Most people use SageTV (I do) or Beyond TV. You can demo both I think.

If you just want to watch from a monitor in a window there might be simpler and free solution (maybe the bundled stuff).

Ya, you can capture from the composite ports (I've never used mine for that). It's just a hardware mpeg encoder PCI card with a TV tuner. Most of the real work is the authoring :)

Ulead DVD Workshop Express is a pretty good authoring app for less than $200.

It doesn't have all the features of some of the really high end (and really hard to use) authoring tools... and most of its included templates are pretty weak. But it'll do just about everying that iDVD does. There are even some free authoring apps if you just want to make a basic video DVD without menus.

Bundled is Ulead DVD Movie Factory. It's ok. It'll do the job.

But if you like making DVDs with nice interactive menus really consider upgrading to Ulead DVD Workshop Express, it'll make your life a lot easier. You might also want to edit the videos with a different app too.

Off topic for here,... but easier to ask you directly than to post a thread and hope you see it :)

CardShark: That PSU fit in the case easily? I've ordered the PSU already, but heard the case has a fiddly or small space for the PSU...

I'd appreciate it if you could email me anandtech@dave-e.demon.co.uk, or reply on here if the others don't mind the momentary hijack ;)
