Do you listen to the commentaries on DVD's you buy or rent?

A couple of my favs are Fight Club and Shaun of the Dead. I also find that the Kevin Smith movies have pretty funny commentaries as well.

I like'em. Gives you a little background on things sometimes and points out interesting things about either the shooting location, the movie, the actors, funny moments behind the scenes, etc.

It just really depends. Guillermo Del Torro (Pan's Labrinth, Hellboy, Blade 2) is a very fun guy to listen give the directors commentary.

Rob Zombie was also fun on his movies.

Some of them are just dull, boring, and take themselves way too seriously.

The Clerks 2 commentaries (all 3 of them) were awesome. Plus Clerks 2 is just a kickass movie. Some of them are trash though, especially when it's with people like the art director and cinematographer or something.

I listen to it if I were absolutely obsessed with the movie. Otherwise, I will skim it to, listening for anything interesting at favourite scenes.

Not very often.

I'll listen if I'm interested in the making of the movie, but I'll stop listening if the people don't have much to say and spend most of their time watching the movie with me.

On the Elite version of Evil Dead 1 there are 2 good commentaries, one by Bruce Campbell and another by Raimi & Tapert. Learn the history of the shaky cam, and why trees are not a girl's best friend. The commentary for Re-animator (Stuart Gordon) was good too.

The Conan commentary by Ahnold & Milius on the other hand was disappointing: a boring description of what was happening on-screen mostly just stating the obvious. It might have gotten better later on but I couldn't take it long enough to find out.

Small sample size, but with how few that actually listen to the commentary, i'm surprised they continue to put them on the DVD's.

I watch the movies i like with commentary, but i only make it all the way through if they are funny rather then just boring backhand info.

The Futurama commentary is hilarious, i would imagine that the Simpsons would be pretty good too as its from some of the same people. The commentary on super bad is pretty funny also.

Superbad was pretty good. If you haven't already, don't bother with the commentary on Knocked up. Seth Rogan is unbearable on that one.

To make people feel like their getting more for the crazy amount that some DVDs cost.

You did include rentals as well as purchases, and even then half the sample watch them sometimes.

The studios probably did surveys and found commentaries increased the perceived value of a DVD to buyers even for people who never get around to listeninig to them :)

I'm sure that's the case. I'd assume the actors and production staff that partake in the commentaries do it for free anyway...to try and help sell more DVD's and get more money.

I've listened to the commentary on Transformers and Serendipity. I watched every single special feature on the Transformers DVD. I also turn on the Notes about Nothing on Seinfeld DVDs. Thing about commentaries is, you're devoting the entire length of the movie just to the commentary.

I've never listened to a single commentary. I consider myself a movie-lover, last check I had 300+ Netflix rentals.

Not usually on ones I rent because I only watch them once. Otherwise, yes, I watch all the extras and bonuses as well as any commentaries on the DVD. I've always been interested in filmmaking and what goes into it, so it's interesting to hear director and production designer or cinametographer commentary rather than actor, for me. Although The Rundown commentary with The Rock (and I think director) was pretty funny.

I need to re-watch my Alien series DVD set with the commentaries on, now that I think of it.

I don't think I've ever listened to one even once ... in fact the only DVD "extra's" I've ever touched are the Pixar shorts.
