DVD clips to powerpoint help

I have been asked to help on a project that will include taking 30-40 second clips from a movie (DVD) and getting them to play in a power point presentation. What software could I use on my laptop to get clips from the DVD's into a useable format for powerpoint?

I'm sure it's not the best software in the world, and it's not free (but it's relatively inexpensive after rebates), but I use Pinnacle Studio 8 (I think the newest version is 9) for manipulating video. I think you'll need to rip the content from DVD first though... I've only used captured video from my camcorder or AVI/MPG files that I've ... err... acquired :roll:

MoFunk, do you have a Digital camcorder? (Digital 8 or Mini-DV) If so, it may be possible to connect the DVD player output (S-Video or composite) into the camcorder, then let it digitize the video back into your computer over the Firewire. Yes, I know that does a digital to analog to digital conversion, but it beats the decryption problem and gets it into a format that PowerPoint can handle easily (AVI).

We are not using an external DVD, just the DVD-Rom in my laptop.

I will see if I can grab a trial version of pinnacle.

I just tried this and it worked perfectly.

First, I used DVD-Lab to "demultiplex" the VOB file into its Video and Audio streams. DVD-Lab can be downloaded for a free 30 day trial.
I ended up with two files. The video file had an extension of MPV which nothing seemed to like. For Windows MovieMaker, I changed to the extension to MP2V and it was just fine.
The audio file is PCM audio and DVD-Lab converts it to a WAV file no problem.

If your laptop is WinXP, you already have MovieMaker. Edit the file on the timeline as needed. Output to AVI and PowerPoint can handle that just fine.

Thanks all, here is what I did and it seems to work great for what we are doing. I use DVDShrink to grab the scene, or part of the scene. I then found a program called dvd-to-mpeg and this will convert to mpg. I will still experiment with the other suggestions to find the best one.

Does anyone know of an easy way to edit the audio of a dvd file or mpg? Sometimes there is a scene we want to use that may contain a swear word that we would like to fade out.

It won't be editable as long as the video and audio are multiplexed. If you have two files, then many programs can adjust the audio (the Wave editor in Nero, for example).
