DVD/CDRW problems with reading

I have a dvd/cdrw in my laptop. The drive is a Slimtype DVD+RW SDW-421S. When I go to put a dvd in it doesn't eve detect it in My Computer and the windows pop-up menu doesn't show up.. When I stick a RW disc in that has media on it it has the usual pop-up what I would like to do menu, but when i go to My Computer, same thing happens, it doesn show any media on the cd-rw. When i stick an audio cd in, it doesn't even come up with the windows pop-up menu, and still show nothing in My Computer. What's going on here? It won't even detect my driver cd for my wireless pcmcia card. I need help

I'm running Windows Pro with SP2.

I wish I could remember if I had these problems before installing SP2. The driver I am using is the one given to me by windows on installation. Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks!
