Anyone got any recs on DVD CD-RW Combo drives? I'm highly considering Toshiba's 12x6x40 one, for $135. Anyone have any suggestions for or against that one? What about other options? Thanks!

Not too many options, I would go for the Toshiba myself. LG, ans Samsung make units, but I don't think they record as fast as the Toshiba.

It would not be much more explesive (and probably cheaper) to buy sperate DVD and CDRW drives.

I have the Toshiba 4X DVD/CDRW drive and it's great. It's quiet and does it's job without any complaints. I got a silver one to match my Lian Li case. :)

If you're made of money, Plextor is releasing a 20X10X40X12 drive soon.

I just got my lian-li pc42 yesterday; with only one 5-1/4 bay I'm also looking for a combo drive.

prontospyder--did you purchase your silver toshiba at directron?

Pariah--any links to info on that plextor? (I'm not too lazy to search, but my dial-up speed/connection has been really bad)

My vote is also for separate drives. If one screws up, you're still in business.

Also simplifies direct copying with better speeds.

i want a dvd-r/-rw/+rw.. whichever (forgot the differences...).. mainly cause the case i made only has one drive bay (goal was to make it as small as possible). but, if you aren't crazy like me... and have the space, i would also suggest going for separate drives. i used to have a cdrom, a cdr and a dvd (one was cd cart. load, one was tray, one was slot ;)). Then i realized i was crazy and had way too many drives and moved it around a lot.

another reason is you are very limited to what there is out there.

I know I've got my eye on an LG drive for $130 Canadian bones. 12xCDRW 8xDVD. Don't need much more than that... cheap too! Not so much for right now, but when I build my own computer and leave the Dell for my wife, she'll get plain CD-ROM while I get the combo drive in a tiny uATX case. ;)

Of course, everything will be networked anyways.... ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have one question. How good are the LG Drives? I see a whole bunch of them pretty cheap on Pricewatch that look great for the price, but I've never heard of them. Thanks guys.

I have had my Ricoh MP9120A combo drive for well over a year now. 12x/10x/32x CD-RW + 8x DVD. This thing has been nothing short of pure pleasure. I've ripped and re-burned around 200 music CDs (re-burned to add CD-Text). This unit has been rock solid even while some cheap pieces of media tried to bring it to its knees.

Unfortunately, I think Ricoh has left the US market in this area. I would only trade up to a DVD+/-RW.
