DVD/CD Read issues on notebook

I purchased a new laptop 2 weeks ago, so I wanted to prep my old one to sell to someone. I used the Recovery CD's that came with the machine (Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507).

The process got to disc 2, then failed. My CD drive is having problems reading the disc. I know the discs are OK, because when I originally purchased the notebook I used them.

At this point I'm stuck. I tried using a USB DVD/CD drive, but my laptop isn't recognizing it during boot. I tried Ghost 2003 to get the proper USB drivers, still nothing.

I really want to get this machine back to its old form. If anyone can assist me by pointing me in a good direction, I'd appreciate it.

You can try cleaning the Laser on the DVD to see if it is not reading
due to dust\dirt on the lens.

Also try cleaning the DISK to remove every last smuge from it.

Baring that, there is lttle else you can do.

The 5005 series had a high failure rate of peripherals due to excessive heat.

If you are the original owner you can be part of a class-action lawsuit settlement.
(although it is past the filing deadline {June 27} you still may be eligible)
