DVD Cataloging software

I spent a good chunk of my day today alphabetizing my ever-growing DVD collection. It was a mindless, boring job that I didn't mind until i ran out of shelf space. This got me thinking that there must be a better way.

Basically, what I'm wondering is if there is any software that would allow me to rip all my DVDs to my hard drive and catalog them by title, with pictures of the cases/discs and then play the DVDs right from this catalog.

I know that there are a few commercially available products for this such purpose, but they are all very expensive and it seems that many require central installation and then client box installations in all the rooms that want access to the movie collection.

I really only would need this for one television, but if somehow I could share my catalogue over a network that would be a bonus.

If anyone has any info on this topic your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance 🙂

Planning on having a terabyte or two

Edit: actually, now that i realize i have close to 400 DVDs... well assuming they are dual layer ~8gb discs on average would yield a needed space of 3.2tb at a minimum (assuming that its a 1 disc DVD set). So I guess my options are to just rip the movie (no extras) which would be about 3-4gb (so 3.5gb) per movie would mean i would need a minimum of 1.4tb storage (which isnt that unrealistic these days). Or, i guess option 2 would be to rip to DIVX or XVID... lets assume an average movie at high quality rips to 1.5gb, I would still need a minimum of 600gb (I got 400 in my current non-HTPC config) which is a very realistically attainable amount of space.
