DVD burning software for Leopard

You can use Toast (payware, very complete suite) and it will possibly handle everything you need.

For freeware, a combination of Handbrake, Burn, and (I think it is called) Smoke.

Are we talking movies?

If so, and if you are burning with DVD-DL, then you can use Toast from start to finish. Or you can use Disk Utility to create an ISO, and then drop that into Burn to make a disc. (Burn might actually let you copy it from start to finish as well, I have never tried).

If you want to create a lower quality copy, then use Handbrake to rip it into whatever file format you like (you can find a way to play it on another OS) and then use Burn to convert those files to DVD-Video Format and burn them to disk.
 
My friend is using Handbrake and the only option for her that I see is .MP4 but she want's to be able to burn it back to a DVD Doesn't it have to be in .VOB file format?

EDIT: can she use DVD shrink, DVD decrypter, or AnyDVD on a Mac?

VOB keeps things faster, otherwise the burning software needs to convert the video pre-burn.

I just heard about RipIt, it is also a pay app, only costs $20 though to Toast's $80. Not positive if it will get you a VOB though.

So, just to be clear, you have DVD Movies, retail purchased ones.

You want, at the very least, a backup disk of these movies.

1: Do you want a hard drive backup?
2: Do you want a smaller file size hard drive copy (eg AVI format)?
3: Do you want full quality DVD backups (No compression, DVD-DLs)?

Answer these if you please. (see that there, I rhymed)

The way I personally back-up my DVDs is I use DVD Shrink 3.2, DVD Decrypter, or AnyDVD which will save the file in .VOB format which when re-burned, comes out looking as good as the original DVD. And that is what she is looking for.

One other question. Can Handbrake be used on both a Mac & PC?

Fairmount is free. Works great for me. Simply have the app running and put a disc in the drive then you can copy the contents freely off of it to your HDD and I believe just create a Burn Folder (Right Click on Desktop choose New Burn Folder, place files in there and then click the Burn icon) and go.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the Burn Folder of DVD files.

Fairmount should at least get you what DVD Decrypter does for free in OS X.

I have never used Fairmount, and used a Burn folder, once, in Tiger about a week after I got my first Mac...

If you take the files to Burn (the application) then that will definitely work, and is also free.

I am testing this theory now.

Ok, so full quality backups. I am testing Kmax's instructions. Copying the Video_TS folder takes a little while, Fairmount actively decrypts the data as it goes, which slows down the process.

Handbrake is available, in GUI, for both Windows and OS X. I believe the OS X version is a little faster, but the Windows version gets the job done. It is great for converting the files to something else (iPhone version, AppleTV version, PS3 version, you get the idea.)

We got that. Have you tried Fairmount? It will let you pull the VOB files right off the DVD. Then, you can take those and burn them straight to disk.

I made a copy of ConAir this morning using FairMount and Burn. I couldn't get burn folders to work, but I may have flipped some setting somewhere to do that.

Yea.. I'd never tried Burn Folders, just seemed like it would work. Good to know that FairMount and Burn worked though.
