I'm looking at grabbing either the NEC or the Pioneer myself. Quick question on the topic of Bitsetting. I have an old Toshiba 3109 that is pretty cranky about disks it plays. Word has it that it'll handle DVD-R's, but in many cases it prefers if these are set to DVD-ROM via a bitsetting tool.

Can someone tell me if this tool exists for either of the above drives, and if anyone has any experience where this has made the difference for a given DVD media either working or not in an old stand-alone player?

My old Toshiba has been very good to me, and is still better quality with the Colorstream(component) outputs to my 48" RPTV than other newer, yet more flexible DVD players I've tried...

Any info is appreciated...

In the past I've ordered all my cdr media from Cascade Media because of their prices and selection of Mitsui and Taiyo Yuden cdr blanks that I swear by. Their DVD media is more limited, and they only have -R media (but once again great brands). I prefer +R (just my choice, I hear good things on both formats) and so far I've been buying them (Verbatim) locally, but I was refered by someone I trust to Meritline for a great selection and great prices on both +R and -R media. I have yet to order from them, so I can't personally vouch yet, but when I need some more media I'm going to give them a try. Check it out, the selection looks great.

I've used 1clickcopytoDvd. Great program. I use it on a plextor with no coasters ever. Cheap too.
I'll wait for plextor to get a dual layer burner. By then media will be cheaper.
Check site videohelp.com (dvdrhelp.com) for info

I've used rima.com for my TY cdr purchases, I'm waiting to buy some TY dvd+r media once it either drops in price, or I get more spending money ($87 for 100 8x dvd+r/$79 for 4x). They do have other cheaper media as well.

I have a NEC2510A and it's worked well so far with the ridata 4x dvd-r (ritek g04) I've used on it. The newegg "gift" dvds (also ritek g04) were horrid and both dvds I've burnt have been coasters due to massive errors.

For the time being, dual layer is mostly worthless due to the media being 10x more expensive than single layer, but it's nice to have the feature when the media becomes more affordable.
