dvd burning problem...hardware related?

ok, got a nec 2500a thats burned about 30 dvd perfectly with dvd shrink. suddenly today i see that there are weird patterns on the dvd, stripes and so forth, and the dvd copies freeze or arent recognized in the dvd player. i reinstall dvd shrink but it continues. i play the rips on the hard drive and the movie runs fine. 5 dvd's in a row have errors, so i try a cd and it fails during burning. is it safe to assume my brand new dvd burner needs to be replaced? how can i check to make sure?

Well since the media seems not be the problem, it is possible the drive is failing. You can try to upgrade the drive's firmware first from the maker's web page. If that doesn't work I would RMA it.

I doubt it, but to be certain if you have another burner or borrow one from a friend, test and see. I am pretty sure it is hardware related. You can always try a different burning software to test your theory.
