DVD Burning File/App Question

I have video files on my computer... generally avi's and more the likely they have xvid or divx compression. Whatever is popular as you all know. I want to burn them to DVD's. From what I have read you need to convert the files first. I believe to mpeg? I have also seen that this takes a long time correct? Anyways, what program can take an avi and convert it to mpeg so I can burn it?

What program is good to burn with? I have heard Nero 6. Do I need any plug ins or just the basic Nero 6 installed?

Lastly...

For copying I have read/heard that DVD X Copy is the way to go. It does everything for you correct?
 
I'll check it out...

I was hoping to get some program names here and pick them up on my way home from work
