DVD Burner wont burn DVDs

Ok I have a Lite-On SOHW-812S DVD-RW that refuses to burn DVDs. It reads DVDs fine, burns cds fine, and reads cds if it feels like it. The problem is that if I try to burn a DVD at any speed and either simulation or write, nero (and some others) totally freeze up like 1 second into caching the files or burning (if i dont cache). I tried updating the firmware but it did not help.

Please help. I want to back up a dying drive.

some specs would be nice -- eg. hdd size & buffer? ram amount / cpu

if the simulation is not even working you may have a error with udma modes -- eg. the ide channel is not configured to support the amount of data needed to be transferred....
also could be a nero error.... i've heard of those....
finally did u upgrade your 812 firmware to the 832firmware to enable dual layer? you may have botched that up

if the simulation works but not the write it may be due to crappy discs.... apparently liteon is not so good with them

AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Albatron KX600 mobo (via kt600)
512 MB PC3200 RAM CAS 3 (gross)
HDD1 WD 80 GB 7200 RPM 8MB Buffer
HDD2 Maxtor 30GB 7200 RPM 2MB Buffer
Geforce FX 5950 Ultra
Antec 430W psu

I upgraded to like US0Q firmware or something. But now that you mention it, I was having troubles with the IDE controller not to long ago but then it just went away. So how would I go about configuring my IDE controller. In the many years I've built pcs, I've never ran into an IDE problem so i'm a noobie when it comes to this

since your mobo is a kt600 -- you need the via "4in1 drivers" i think .... go to via website i guess
also in bios make sure the udma settings are not limited to pio mde
in device manager check that there are no yellow excalmations on the hdd device controllers

also not sure of your cabling system -- eg. are u using the newer style data cables and do u have the dvd burner on the same ide channel as the primary hdd

check your IDE drivers under device manager

install via 4 in 1's

i know this was a problem on the nForce platform, that it would be a microsoft IDE driver. but all you need to do is install the chipset/ide drivers.

Ok I installed the latest 4 in 1 drivers, checked the bios but couldn't find anything related to UDMA limiting, and I checked the device manager and I think I see a problem. There is a little yellow ! next to VIA Bus Master IDE controller. So I tried the simulation again and it failed again.

Wait... I just checked again and the yellow ! is gone. Hmmm I'll try again

EDIT: Ok I still doesn't work. Another weird thing I noticed that when I restarted the thing that shows after POST says DVD-RW ATA 33. 33 seems really low I think.

Oh and thank you all for helping

I would reformat & install the latest VIA 4 in 1s (if those are indeed the correct drivers).

I was having almost exactly the same problem as you are, & nothing fixed it except a format.

I think somehow the VIA IDE controller drivers get corrupted, but upon reformatting & reinstalling the latest drivers, everything was well 🙂

Well I'm already due for a reformate. As soon as I order my mem and new cd-rom I'm formatting. Hopefully that will fix it. If not I'm confused

Try going into the device manager, check the ide controller. In the advanced tab make sure that DMA if avalible is selected for the transfer mode.
