DVD burner recommendation?

My old 4x burner is having some issues, so it's time to replace it. I want to spend <$40 (because there are so many out there for that price) and want something that is above all reliable (not too picky about media, etc.). I am considering the Samsung SH-S182M and from what I've heard, would be interested in the BenQ 1655, but can't find them for sale anywhere (at least for a decent price). Are there any others I should look at? Is the Samsung as good as anything? I read a review at cdrinfo that said DVD-R write quality is suspect though...

BenQ is top notch. THey are also sold rebranded as Phillips players (ie 1650 is sold as the 1660), might be easier to find them that way.

Thanks for the info on the Philips BenQ clones. Unfortunately, I don't see any of those for sale online either.

As for the place with the BenQ, they aren't even listed on resellerratings, so I think I'll pass on that one.

I can get the BenQ 1655 here for $41.99 shipped. They seem to have an ok reseller rating. Assuming I could get the Samsung for about $10 less if Newegg has free shipping on it again, is the BenQ worth it for $10 more? What about the NEC 3550? Are there any other drives I should look at?

Ok, why does it keep blocking out part of the web address for the store I found it at? It's at meritline.com.

I assume you mean the 3550? Can you point me to a review of this drive? I found reviews for 3540's but not the 3550. Anybody know the difference?

Plextor drives are very good, but a bit expensive. NEC drives are cheaper, and still decent. IMO, NEC offers very good value for money.
