dvd burner recognition problems

Sys specs: Gigabyte 6150 board, AMD 3200 and a Plextor dual layer IDE drive

Almost everytime XP seems to think there is a problem with the dvd drive. Initially, when it reported the problem, I uninstalled all the DVD burning software including any upper and lower filters in the registry. I even uninstalled the drive and reinstalled the hardware so that it has a "fresh" start.

This doesn't fix the problem. Every time I have to uninstall the drive thru Device Manager and "scan for new hw". Oddly, XP uses the same drivers as when the drive is supposed to have problems.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?
 
Do you have it on a channel with anything else?

Do you have it configured directly as master or slave and not cable select?
 
The channel is not shared by anything else. The BIOS correctly identifies the drive at boot up. Basically, everything seems to be right but obviously something is missing.... What is frustrating is that when uninstall and scan for new hw the drivers are exactly the same as when the drive doesn't get recognized.
 
Did it ever work correctly? If so, what was installed after. Watch out for games that use StarForce.
 
Try installing the ASPI layer software from Adaptec. I know it says it's for SCSI but trust me on this one. It often will cure strange optical drive probs and can help with SATA too. And it rarely, if ever, will cause any problems. So says Johnny ASPIseed.
