Does anyone have the NEC 3500A dvd burner? any problems? issues? results? hapy with it? like it? and so on heh ... i just bought it on newegg for 73 bucks and i bought the newegg ext. warranty for 5 bucks and i got free newegg dvd+r's with it too.

I bought because it was one of the top burners available with what i was looking for. it was that or buslink.

I have one. It's great IMHO, the best out there. Has the best speeds allround 16x dvd, 4x dual layer dvd, and 48x cdr. No other burner matches those specs.

First off, asking if something is good after ordering it isn't too intelligent ;)

I've had my NEC 3500A for over a month now.

Pros:
-No coasters after 60+ DVD-Rs
-Extremely quiet
-The door opens and closes smoothly
-Nice looking front bezel

Cons:
-Poor CD-R media support; I've only found one brand of CD-Rs that the 3500A can actually burn at its advertised speed of 48x. It has forced all other brands of CD-Rs to be burned at only32x :|
-Slow CD/CD-R reading speed. My old Lite-On 40x12x48x CD-RW drive (2 years old) outperformed the NEC 3500A by reading a full 700mb CD-R roughly 45 seconds quicker!
-DVD ripping speed is limited to only 5x. Sure, it can read a normal DVD at 16x, but at 5x, it's painfully slow for DVD ripping.
-Only one color status LED: Green. Other burners have switched between green and orange or red to indicate if they're reading or writing. I don't really care about this, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

When shopping for a DVD burner, I'd hoped to only have a single optical drive...one that could read and write DVD's and CD's at maximum rates. According to the specs, the NEC 3500A met my needs. However, the specifications lie. It can't rip DVDs at 16x, and it can't burn CD-Rs at 48x.

The 3500A burns DVDs great, and it's a very solid and quiet drive, but it turned out to be much less than what I'd expected. So, I ordered a Lite-On 52X32X52X16 Combo Drive last week. Now I can rip DVDs and write CD-Rs at full speed :)

As far as I know, there's currently no DVD burner capable of meeting my requirements (particularly the CD-R burning speeds). The only solution if you want maximum speed DVD and CD burning is to either have a separate drive for those needs, or to spend more $$$ on high quality media that the 3500A will burn at 48x...when another drive could have burned cheaper media at 52x with ease.

Edit:

After seeing my post, I realized I put a lot of effort into discussing the negative qualities of the 3500A. I'm actually very happy with the drive, and I anticipate firmware updates to enable better media support. However, I grew impatient with 32x CD-R burning and figured that having two optical drives would be beneficial even if the NEC 3500A did become better after firmware updates.

Go for the 3500A, but keep in mind that no current optical drive has absolutely everything.

I tried some of my own Memorex 40x media, but it only allowed 32x on that even though my Lite-On drives think that its 48x media (and have never burned a coaster after nearly 200 discs).

I tried two different brands of 52x media. One was Memorex, and another was something my girlfriend has been using in her 52x Lite-On drive. The NEC 3500A only allowed 32x for both of those.

The first time it allowed 48x was when I inserted the sample disc included with the retail Lite-On 52x32x52x16x combo drive I bought :p I checked the brand with Nero's disc checker app and I think it was Ridata or Ricoh. I'd check, but that CD-R is in my car right now and I'd rather not fetch it.

@Gerbil333, try the firmware update I posted. It removes the rip speed and increases media compatibility.

I was waiting for an official release. Has anyone had any trouble with the modded firmware? I guess I could give it a shot.

Manufacturers often rebadge drives, so they're actually all the same model, but with different names.

Works great for me. It's not some amateur's writing this stuff from scratch, they're just cutting and pasting disc IDs from different firmwares. Plus, you can always just flash back - the 2500/3500 series is flash safe, unlike the 1000/1100/1300 (I learned that the hard way.)

Ok, I'll probably flash it then, but it's not a high priority since I have the combo drive now...

Getting my 3500a Monday, definately flashing the firmware. Also, how do you go back if it messes up, you said it was "flash safe" .. ?

Sounds like the 3500 can be picky about what media is used. Any DVD burners (besides the SATA Plextor), that burn everything you toss in them... fast?

Just run the flasher again - the 2500/3500 flash in a manner different than most drives - the firmware update is downloaded in its entirety to the drive's buffer before flashing.

Well i heard many good things about the drive and did my research. All of these problems i hear about can be fixed VIA firmware updates. So i wasn't too concerned about that after reading all the firmware updates currently being worked on.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Forum/t...mp;tmode=1&smode=1

i went to here and found some usefull information which determined my choice to get it. I just wanted a general user comment of people who actually own it if they like it and so on. I just bought memorex dvd+rw 4x media and fuigi 8x media. Can't wait to try them out.

thanks for the response that remained on topic. You are probably the only one that has =/

@Ka0t1x: Did you flash with the 2.C8 firmware I linked above? I'm able to burn 48x on Optodisc media I picked up at Wal*Mart.

Hmm Yeah I flashed with 2.C8 I might hafta check out the Optodisc's.

Also I jumped on the $5 off the 50pk AVB 8x DVD-R's .. I burned one of them at 12x with DVDShrink ( It automatically started to burn at that speed as it's "max" )
