The 811 is very similar to the 411, except that the 811 can burn at 8X out of the box. There's a lot of information:

I have the Lite-On 851 which is also similar to the 811 and an NEC 2500. Both drives work well, but the NEC 2500 does a slightly better job at fast speeds on cheap media. The NEC also looks and feels more solid than the Lite-On.

If I were buying one today, I'd probably go with the NEC 2510 which is dual layer and about $20 more:

Buy the NEC 2510 from NewEgg. I just got one and I love it.

I had a Nu Tech DDW-082 (which I bought on the recommendation of Anandtech, I might add) and returned it because it would not write DVD-R disks correctly. What a piece of JUNK!

Just got a Nu-Tech DDW-082 and it's extremely fast burns my Ritek 4X +R media @ 8X with no errors. I burned 4GB in just under 7 minutes. The drive is very quiet and seems well built. I can't speak to how it burns -R media, but I know the firmware it came with was awful. The first 4X I ran @ 8X with the shipping firmware was riddled with errors (B370). I flashed to the latest B373 firmware and I haven't had a problem since. Personally, I liked it better over the NEC, and I really have no need for -R burning anyhow, so I'll probably never bother with it. Both my set top DVD players play the +R just fine, and IMO, it's the better format anyhow.

Did you ever try to upgrade the firmware?

I was using the B373 firmware with my Nu Tech. Using Nero, I could watch the buffer jump all around, sometimes it looked like it went to zero! i suppose I may have received a defective one, but that isn't a good sign either. There is also something wrong with it's bit-setting capability. No matter if I set the "DVD-ROM" bit or not, DVD+R (8X Ridata R03) disks would not play in my Samsung 931 DVD player.

Get the NEC 2510. The buffer level sits at 98% and never moves. I've written + and - disks with it and they play in every DVD player I've tried them in. And it is much quieter to boot! (It also writes DL disks)...

No offense man, but why would I RMA it? It's working as advertised, and actually, even better than that since I'm burning 4X media @ 8X. I tried the DVD's I have made with +R discs on my two set top DVD players, on my neighbors DVD player, and a friends DVD player, and the discs work in all of them. I burn 4GB in under 7minutes, which is quite fast IMO, and if the drive does have issues with DVD -R, I have no plans to ever use that media anyhow, so it's irrelevant to me. Also, the NEC may be dual layer, but I think I'll wait to go with a Dual Layer drive until they are more mainstream, and the media is cheap and readily available. I generally never buy the first generation of any hardware, because you usually end up kicking yourself down the line when faster and newer drives are cheaper.

As for Nero, I wonder if you read about the issues with earlier versions of Nero's causing problems on certain DVD burners. I came across this in my research, so I made sure I had the lastest version of Nero 6 Ultra, and I have had 0 issues other than the first bad write with the old B370 firmware. Also, my buffer never drops below 95%, so it sounds like to me, you might have just gotten a bad unit. You do realize that your experience with one drive has no statistical relevance to how reliable these drives are right? It's the same with mine. Just because my one drive is operating flawlessly does not mean all of them will.

Anyway, I'm glad you are happy with your NEC, and I'm happy with my Nu-Tech, so I don't see the problem.

:)

Edit: Also, you do realize the the -R/RW format has no dual layer media format even announced yet, and as of now, the only dual layer media that will be available is +R/RW. IMO, -R is on the way out...maybe not right away, but down the line, I think +R/RW is plainly the better format. Here is a good article @ CDFreaks.com regarding the two formats.

I meant Kckazdude (Remember him? He started this post?) should get the NEC. Insane3D, you're stuck with the Nu Tech, so I hope you like it.

As far as media goes, I'll buy what ever costs less. Which is DVD-R...YMMV
