DVD Burner question...please help!

I'm getting a Sony DRU510A for Christmas. I realize it's a 4X burner & that there are 8X burners on the market. What I was wondering was how much worse this would be performance-wise compared to an 8X, considering this model has an 8mb buffer & the 8X units mostly have 2mb buffers.
I think quality-wise, this unit is as good as the NEC's & Plextors, yes?
Thanks for your help.

I think the 510a is better than the NEC but of course not better than the Plextor. 4X dvd burning is fine. About 15 minutes usually. 8X is cool too but I don't think it's worth the extra money. Especially the way the Hot Deals work out. You could get an 8x burner now for x amount of dollars and two months later it's going to be 30-40% cheaper.

Here is the deal....with burners you have to figure out how much burning you REALLY do.

Most of the time people go for the best assuming they are those pushing the boundaries.

I burn a lot of music, but my 12x is fine....like I don't have time to wait 7 mins for a CD 🙂

When I go DVD +/- R/RW soon....4x I will go more than likely.

i have it, it works fine, 4x dvd burning is more than u'll ever need. plus, there's not gonna be any 8x discs out there anytime soon, so ur kinda limited to 4x anywayz, and by the time 8x discs are around, dvd burners will be so cheap u could then get an 8x burner. DVD media that takes advantage of the drive: Memorex, as far as i know, they're the only ones with 4x DVD+RW and 2x DVD-RW's. Their CD-RW's don't work with this drive, i've tried, but then again, CD-RW's are just plain trash.

im gettin a dual format burner for xmas as well. What discs should I be getting + or -? Is one better for certain things than the other?

Right now the burners that advertise 8x will do so with DVD+R media only. I have the Plextor and with 4X DVD+R media, it will burn at 8x. I am sure eventually DVD-R will catch up but for now it is only +R and you don't need 8X media. As for speed, burning at 8X is twice as fast as 4X

DVD+R is newer so they say it is a little less compatible but I haven't found a DVD player yet that wouldn't read my DVD+Rs.

I really do not know if one format is better than the other. I use both (have a sony dru-500a and a pioneer A06) and have not run into any problems with the + or - format on any of the dvd players that I have tested them in. The quality of the media is more important IMO.

Actually the new NEC is out and can burn -R at 8x.
Not bad for $140

I'm glad Dug keeps up with current events. 😉 I'd say the NEC 8X ±R 4X ±RW drive is king pending reviews. It will burn at 8X with + AND - R DVDs, plus it will do 4X ±RW. And like Dug said, at $140, why would you buy anything else? 😉

Only if you didn't know before doing any research. I knew the 8x was eventually coming out, but didn't think it was so soon.... like a week after I bought my NEC 4x.
🙁
Anybody want to buy an NEC 1300A with the latest BIOS and black face plate? Never burned a coaster with it.
