650 nm 150 mW laser from a $30 DVD-RW drive. Amazing considering the diodes themselves in single quantities cost more than that! :Q

So next time you have a RW drive that's acting up, you can rip out the visible diode for a fun project. 🙂

Diode lasers are somewhat tolerant of *moderate* increases of power beyond specification. Heat is a problem with long run times but that can be taken care of with proper mounting. Facet damage is the other common demise of a laser diode - on its way to becoming an LED. :Q It's possible to get 200mW out of a 150mW product and with intermittent use and proper cooling it will provide an acceptable service lifetime.

I've actually seen this happen with an xbox. The laser melted the game cd, and went on to melt the plastic cover of the console. Crazy, huh?
 
That was completely unimpressive. It only took them about 30 seconds to make a cut in a piece of paper that I could do in under a second with a pair of scissors.

It sounds like something else provided the heat to do that much damage.

DVD's are quite reflective at 650nm. I've actually bounced several WATTS off a DVD and popped balloons strung on the ceiling before. WHOOPS! :laugh:

Consoles can't write to a disk right? (I'm totally out of the loop on these things)
So if they are read only they will have a much lower power laser in the 5mW range - same as the dollar store pointers. That won't burn anything.

Even if the laser was > 100mW, the GRIN lens used to focus the beam for hitting the "pits" on the disk becomes quite large - its divergence is well over 50 milliradians just a mm or two past the disk position.

That totally misses the point. Sure a pin can pop a balloon too. But it's much more fun to do it from afar with a beam of intense light.
 
Dr. Allen and Dr. Parsons have joined with me to put a giant "laser" on the moon made of old CD drives. We call this evil endeavor the Allen Parsons Project.
