DVD backup question

I've got experience with DVDXCopy(platinum) but I'm having problems burning at 4x (even with Nero, and I presume that's the problem when it tries to write at full speed with DVDXCopy). My alternative is to use another program to rip the image from my DVD first, then use Nero at 2x (only way DVDR burning has worked for me before).

I know DVD Shrink (based on a demo) will do this. What format does it rip it to ? I presume Nero will burn it or will I need something else ?

Are there any other all-in-one rippers that have adjustable burn speeds ?

Are you sure it's not your blank media thats causing your slow burns?

Dvd Shrink spits out regular dvd video files (.bup, .ifo, etc) you just use Nero and copy the files over into your VIDEO_TS directory on your blank dvd.

I have the orange-top Riteks that are supposed to be one of the best at 4x. I also tried all the firmware for NEC-1300a... even the latest hacked firmware. DVDXCopy keeps erroring with "cannot write to disc, please check log file for more information" (can't find referring log file - the log file in the dir has an older modified date).

I also would suspect the media. Have you ever been able to burn it at 4x? Just because it's labeled as such, doesn't mean it will burn at that speed, this is true with inferior media. CDRs have shown this for quite some time.

Try these forums. Seems to be down right now.

Lots of people have had success with these same DVD-Rs at 4x.

Here's the thread I started at the forum of the place I bought it from.

EDIT>> I don't mind so much that they burn at 2x instead of 4x, as long as they burn at all ... DVDXCopy doesn't allow the burn speed adjustment so that I can narrow down the cause.

Hmm, sounds like you have Ritek G04s, they should burn at 4X. I think it's a good idea to ditch DVDXCopy, there's a lot of better software out there.
