Hey all,

I just put a DVD player in my computer but the DVD audio is terrible. Is sounds like really distorted and unclear. Sounds sort of like interference. It's definetely not interference though. I'm pretty sure it's a software problem. When I switch it to DirectSound from WaveOut in CyberDVD it seems to be much better, but direct sound is horrible.

Any ideas anyone? I have a Toshiba SD-M1402 DVD player and a Sound Blaster AWE 64 sound card. Thanks,

Kevin

Just a quick thought, have you got DMA box ticked for your DVD drive, might help data speed. Also should you be using wave out for your audio,I would have thought that direct sound should be the best. Have you tested the sound in Directx Diag. You may find the drivers are out of date. The AWE 64 is a bit old now and may not support the latest DirectX features.I would consider buying a Soundblaster Live card for use with your DVD. You get great sound output with this card and with the 5.1 card can now fill your room with sound.

Hye,

DMA is checked for the DVD drive. Wave out was the default setting for PowerDVD. Direct sound kind of sounds muddled and muted. Tested sound in DirectX Diag., everything ok. Audio drivers are the latest available from the web site.

Man, I'm baffled. I realize the sound card is kind of old, but I wasn't really looking to sink any more money into this machine. I might just have to buy a SB Live!.

Thanks for the help! Any other ideas?

I guess this doesn't really help you directly but my AWE64 works fine with my DVD player. Works fine with WinDVD, PowerDVD, and ATi's DVD Player. I have a Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD drive and ATi Rage Fury video card in that machine along with the AWE64.

My next step if I was in your situation would be an fdisk/format/reinstall ritual. Before I spent more money on a new sound card, etc.

For good advice on most DVD problems try here.

Its a great site with DVD problems and solutions. I also recommend DVD Genie from the same site.

Hey all,

Thanks again for the help. Workin, is that sound card ISA? I was reading about hardware issues on Informatrix (that site slatt mentioned), and it said something about older ISA cards. The audio must be downsampled from 48 to 44 and may get distorted cuz of software issues. It also mentioned that ISA cards only run at 8Mhz.

The site said I could lower the sound quality to 24khz. Anyone know how to do this? I realize this might not be the greatest, but it will be better than what I got now.

Thanks,

Kevin

Yessir, it's an ISA card. And the audio is indeed downsampled from 48kHz to 44kHz. Besides the DVD drive, video card, and soundcard I mentioned earlier, the other parts of the system are a venerable Abit BH6 mobo, a Celeron 300A oc'd to 450, 64MB PC100 RAM, and 6.8GB Maxtor HD. Works good, lasts long.....

edit: Oh, and a 3Com ISA NIC and Win98 SE.
