So here's my deal.

I have a radeon 8500 video card.

DVD drive has audio connected to sound card. (CD's play fine)

I'm trying to avoid installing excess software like ATI MM center, if possible. So, I'm trying to use windows media player 9 or Real Player to play dvds. Both programs recognize the dvd's, and video plays back perfectly. But no sound!

Needless to say, I'm a bit confused. Any ideas? I've checked volumes in volume control, and nothing is muted. I guess my question is about how/where the decoding is taking place. I'm assuming that since I see video I am succesfully decoding the dvd via the radeon 8500 hardware. I'm also assuming that since I can hear cd's in my dvd drive that it is hooked up correctly.

Thanks for any help!

The cable you plugged into the soundcard is not needed to hear sound from a dvd....I would check in those programs for sound card settings or go to control panel and check to make sure the correct wav tab is not muted and what not. The radeon 8500 does not handle the sound either. It should go through the pci bus (the digital information) and sent to the soundcard for processing and subsequent output to speakers....

thanks - this helps me. I'll just focus on the sound card. (which makes sense, i'm using the on board audio). I'll try my sblive value.
