DVD-A?

I've been searching lately for a DVD-ROM that is capable of playing DVD-A content. I don't mean the audio on a standard dvd, or the dts layer that is sometimes included on a DVD-A disc. I mean pure DVD Audio discs. Does anyone know if such a DVD-ROM exists?

[stupid question]

Wouldn't most DVD-ROM drives support this feature, and it's just a matter of having software support for DVD-A?

[/stupid question]

Any DVD-ROM can do it. DVD-ROM drives aren't a player, they're a transport. Everything done from them is done with other hardware or software, they can't do anything at all by themselves.

You'll need an Audigy 2 to play DVD-Audio on a computer. That's the only way. And it can only be played through the analog outputs of the card, not digital. Creative includes a DVD-A player with their cards, or you can pay WinDVD for their software, which isn't worth it. Either way, you must have an Audigy 2, Creative is the only manufacturer to have licensed DVD-A.

Yeah I was definitely going to go with the audigy 2 for precisely this reason, but you're sure a normal dvd-rom can read it? I've read some conflicting stuff about dvd-a, I dunno I had this idea in my head thaty they might have higher bandwidth requirements (higher than the maximum of 9.8mbps of a standard dvd) and thus a normal dvd-rom would not be able to play it, but if its just a matter of the sound card physically being able to decode/play the music then I'll just go for the audigy.

Like I said, a DVD-ROM is just a transport, it sends data to your computer, your computer decides what to do with it.

I can confirm that my old liteon LTD 163 DVD player in my computer can play DVD-A audio disks.
I just got the Audigy2ZS platinum and they included a sample DVD-A disk, and I was able to play it and sounds great.

Any dvd player can play DVD-A discs, but you must have these too...
1) A 24 bit sound card: DVD-A is a higher bit rate than CD quality therefore a 16 bit card can't handle a DVD-A disc.
2) DVD-A player software: Like any media you have to have a player to play the media format you want. Real DVD-A will not work in any normal DVD player you must have a player that can do 24 bit DVD-A media. Creative bundles the program with their sound card, so that's why the people above can play DVD-A discs.

So, if you have a 24 bit sound card, DVD-A player software, and any DVD-ROM you can listen to true DVD-A, and yes it is very worth it!
