i just got an IEEE 1394 card made by SIIG and it used texas instruments drivers with winme. i installed everything and the software that came with it, Ulead Video Studio, which ranks among the crappiest software i've used in my life. everything seems to be working fine and the DV is recognized by everything, but when i try to transfer videos to the computer they end up being extremely choppy (both video and audio). they look fine on the screen until i hit record, then all hell break loose. any tips?

I have the SIIG card and Visual Studio.

I don't think that the software is that bad, what do you consider good software? If you have a recommendation as to a better, but affordable package for DV editing, PM me.

As for your problem, I have run VS in Win98SE and W2k without problems. W2k would drop the connection to the camera a lot (another reason that I run 98SE now).

One problem that I did have in w2k was that my hard drive would screw everything up when I went to capture and I would get a choppy, sh!tty slide show, probably what you may be experiencing.

I determined that UDMA33 was not working right for some reason, went to my BIOS and forced PIO4, and the problem was solved. But, PIO4 was not quirte fast enough so things still looked a little poor. Eventually, I reinstalled the OS and everything was fine.

For started, I would: 1) don't overclock, 2) keeping lowering the mode of your hard drive until something works.

Try running some kind of HDD transfer rate monitoring program in the backgound. I found that there was a sudden down spike in the transfer rate that caused everything to go to sh!t.

Good luck,

thanks alot, i had guessed it may be the hard drive and i was even considering getting a scsi drive for faster boot and to solve this problem. i'll try tweaking the hd and hope i wont have to reinstall os.

also the reason i ate the software is because its basic, it makes me feel like i dont know anything about using a computer.... too aol like (dont mean to offend anyone) hehe

Give us some system information please....hardware...driver updates...when you last reinstalled OS...

I have pyro card and dv downloads from camcorder have looked great ever since my amd k62 400 mhz with ata33 controller...

Ulead does have crappy software but for the quirks it is probably some of the easiest to figure out and run...

make sure DMA is enabled on HDD...
