Good data though, thanks. It would seem that we already have some apps available that can benefit from four cores. A few years from now, there should be even more.

Looking at my own benchmarks and trying to analyse them it appears thast most things do 3 cores well now....however 4 over 3 shows little advantage...at least in the apps I tested...

MOst of the apps I have ran (excluding cinebench) have a need for writing and reading files...This leads to possibility of IO limitations NOw with dual core and my no raid setup my other system did not show as big a gains as this in DVDshrink. I clearly may be limited there now with the dual core boix and the Raid setup bought me some speed not to handicap 2 cores at all...It also looks like in most of the apps above 3 cores held 75% or near pretty good....4 cores not showing much could be a result of exceeding my IO ability...

Would need a SCSI controller, some SCSI drives and Raid 3 setup to test that theory...I think that would represent an upgrade to my current setup...

Also once I get my 3rd SATA drive in place I may experiment with it being a drive to hold the files for reading and see if it helps at all...

INtersting DVDshrink data...



1) the dvdrom while an obvious IO limitation only held down my cpu usage with 4 cores by about 10-15%...It is really low at beginning, but builds speed over the entire DVD. Eventually it approaches similar +80% usage...

2) Deep analysis from the DVD takes a huge hit and is extremely IO limited...

Look at this data....

4 cores w/o deep analysis (on HDD) = 15:40 (3.07x faster 1 core, 1.59x faster 2 cores)
4 cores w/ deep analysis (on HDD) = 21:01
4 cores w/ deep analysis (ripped from DVD) = 41:29 (analysis took 20min by itself)
4 cores w/o deep analysis (ripped from DVD) = 21:46

Deep analysis took (21:01 - 15:40) = 5:21 with data on HDD and 4 cores...

Deep analysis took (41:29 - 21:46) = 19:43 with data on DVD-rom with 4 cores...

3) Bottom line is ripping the DVD to HDD first then running deep analysis with 4 core sfaster???

15:23 (rip to HDD) + 21:01 (deep analysis & encode) = 36:24

(no rip) + 41:29 (deep analysis & encode from DVD) = 41:29

Difference is 5 minutes or about the amount of time the encoding from the DVD was slower then the HDD data...clearly IO limitations there...


Convenience??? from the DVD drive for most....

here is a little prime testing to make sure things are stable 11+hours and counting...I think I may let it just ride out a nice 24 hours...

Temps of 55c 1st chip and 45c 2nd....INteresting 10c different!!!

markFW900 dualie also has 1 cpu like 8c higher...In my case there is no possible difference in air flow....


The one thing is burnin hot...is the NB chipset!!! Damn I think I am going to put a fan on it!!!!
 
I added some ADT2004 benchmarks....

I need to download 3dsmax8 and see if there are improved multithreading capabilities...The viz renderer plug-in for ADT 2004 is the same as 3dsmax 6 and 7...no difference in performance time...
 
I added some TMPGenc 3.0 Xpress scores...

Only better if I go high quality like 2,52 and prioritize speed...Read above for the little quirks to the program....
 
Going to be adding an Asus K8n-DL mobo soon...

I lose NUMA but I gain OC options...I am going to try to take these to 2.4-2.6ghz...Even has .05v notch in voltage and up to 2.7v vdimm.....

Stay tuned as that may be coming in the next week or so....

Let see what 400-600 more horse per core will do to above test....

Don't worry, with 1004 or later BIOS, NUMA should work fine; at least in linux, that is.

Hardball PM me about the asus mobo...Need sme more Bios insight and have you tried any ocing?? Just to see if it can be done stably??
 
Ive got a test for you. Watching porn while downloading porn while running a spyware search while useing firefox to reseach STDs all while encoding a jenna jameson movie with dvd shrink.
 
OK....Going to have an Asus K8N-DL shipped to me....

It has ocing options....vcore, vdimm, memory dividers, HTT from 200 tp 400, and detailed cas timings.....

The goal is to get 2.6ghz or 285 speed.....That would be a 33% gain in speed....


Hope to have it by mid week next week.....

May have to get some XP-90s to go with that though...i may try my thermaltakes with 92 mm fans first though...
 
Keep us posted man. That's a nice board and it's very reasonably priced. I just don't like it only having two PCI slots. Other than that, it looks likes a good board.
 
Yeah nice review man. It looks to me like windows might need some updates before quad core is used to the fullest, but mostly I think the apps just arent well coded for multicore. I think that will change as time goes on, though, and your review is a nice outlook on the future. Its cool to me that in the not too distant future we will be able to encode to h264 in real time, especially if ATI gets on the ball and delivers the hardware assisted encoder as promised.
