Duron850 O/C failure, need advice.

Here's the specs:
-Asus A7V133 (BIOS 1.002A)
-Duron 850 Retail Box
-Creative Annihilator 2 32Mb AGP
-SBLive Value PCI
-Maxtor 60Gb
-DVD Pioneer 105S
-Case FK320ATX

I've unlock L1 bridges and multiplier can be changed via BIOS.

But I can only boot once @950MHz, entered windows and did some benchmarking. Afterwards, it just stares blank at me.

Need advice on what's wrong and how to fix, thanks a lot guys.

What voltage are you running at ?
Which cooler are you using, and how hot does the chip run ?

I'm using the original HSF from AMD. (Duron Retail Box).

I'm also using automatic voltage, I've tried higher setting for voltage but it just won't boot up.

Any suggestion?

How hot is ur CPU @ 950mhz? You might need a better HSF..

That's the confusing part... the CPU Temp never reach higher than 57C.
And the strange thing is, I can't use higher voltage because it just won't boot.

57c is kinda high. i mean it's within the spec, but it's high. also, the temperature displayed by motherboards can be upto 15-18C off!! that's a big gamble. invest in a good cooling fan and trust me, u'll love it!

Hmm. Your Duron may not go further then about 950 on standard voltage.My Duron 800 does 1000 on 1,8 V but will not do 950 on default voltage reliably . I Have a ABIT KT7A-raid. ASUS Intel Boards (I have tried the CUSL2 , P3V4X and the CUV4X) have a REALLY stupid design. The board tries to run the processor for a few fractions of a second with the default voltage at the set speed before switching to the increased voltage. If the processor can not do this.
(My duron can not). It is a no go.
ABIT does not seem to have this problem.
The solution on this problem if it exists on a ASUS for AMD is to fiddle with the L-bridges to set the voltage to "1,75-1.80 V default".
On a INTEL-processor you have to fiddle with connecting pins on the prcessor . a scary procedure.
Also remember to take out powercable before resetting CMOS memory after an unseccessful boot.

Can users Of ASUS AMD-boards comment on the above theories please.

the thing that bothered me most is, that after I connected the L1 bridges on the chip... I looked at the heatsink where the thermal compound is.. and it was kinda peeled off. I will try to get a new HSF and see if it'll work.

Any suggestion for HSF? I've heard a lot about super-orb and FOP-32.

And I still have doubt about Duron's operation voltage range. Anyone can confirm how high this DURON can operate before it breaks down (1.8V? 1.7?)

guys,

the duron that i had was definitely a flawed one, it locks up very often now and then. I've sent it back to the store and they said it's a bad one.

I hope I can do better on the new replacement duron.

bigpow, you probably contributed to the demise of that Duron. The PCTC thermal pad is pretty much one time use only. When you remove the hsf, the melted (phase changed) material gets 'messed up'. When you remove the hsf you need to clean off the old pad and replace it with a new one , or apply Arctic Silver.

Your A7V133 has Vcore jumpers, they directly over-ride the L7 bridges and will work when the BIOS settings don't. 1.85 is not too high with a good HSF.

Thank you very much DaddyG, you have the most logical explanation why my Duron 'sick' so quickly.

I will try using the arctic silver II paste with the replacement duron.

And you did say about good HSF, any suggestion?
