Duron700 vs T-bird700, How much performance difference?

I want to put one of these on an Epox 8KTA+ but am trying to determine if the extra performance of the T-bird is worth the extra cost. I was planning to o/c the Duron to the 900 range. Would the T-bird o/c to the same level?

From what I gather, a CPU can never be "guaranteed" to OC to any level. It simply depends on the quality of your core. However, the T'Birds and Durons are comprised of the same core, the only difference being the amount of onboard cache. If I remember correctly the 256K L2 cache of the T'Bird generally yields about a 15-20% increase in performance. Correct me if I'm wrong fellas, if so, I apologize for the mistake. From what most people say, and after seeing the results of what the Durons can pump out in terms of OC'ing speeds, and benchmarking results, and of course you want the best bang for your dollar, I'd say Duron. I personally bought the T'Bird, but I had a little extra money at the time, so that helped my decision. Hope that helps....

duron's overclock much more than t-birds due to the more lenient(sp?) sorting bins of durons, and the generally slow clock speeds to begin with.

Expect to get 100-150 mghz overclock with a tbird , usually.

expect to get 850-950 from a duron 600/650.

A Tbird at 800 runs just as fast in most cases as a duron at 900.


So go figure.

It's very likely a tbird @800 will do 900, but not very likely that a duron of any speed will do 1000mhz stable.

It's very likely to be able to get a 1200mhz copper t-bird on forsale/trade for $280-$300 right now, its not very likely to ever get a duron that even goes near that speed.

Duron scalability ends around 950mghz. The difference between duron 850->900 900->950 , percentage wise, is less from 950 -> 1000mghz. The cache is the problem in scaling to 1ghz on a duron.

so if you need more power than a duron at 950, you're better off getting a t-bird that does 900. It will ultimately be faster.

I think for the biggest bang for the buck youve got to buy the duron if youve got money enough go for the t-bird.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll stick with a Duron for now.

I'm still not sure why I should spend more to get a 700 over a 600 though. If I can get one close to 900 I'll be happy. And either one should hit 800 easily. Am I totally wasting my money on a 700 if I can find a 650 or 600?

Buy the 700. It should hit 900 easy -- and maybe even 1 GHz! Just make sure you get a good heatsink/fan with it -- like an Alpha or GlobalWin.

Xbit-Labs has a good article on Duron overclocking. At the bottom of the article they have a chart of Duron overclocking potential broken down by week and speed. This can give you an idea of what's possible but no guarantees.
Point they make is that the whole week code line is important to watch.
