Duron problems...

I was helping a friend choose and setup a Duron system, and ran into some problems...

First things first, here's the setup currently.
Duron 700
Asus A7V
128MB PC133 Infineon SDRAM
MSI Starforce GeForce2MX 32MB video card
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 20.4GB HDD
Thermaltake Chrome Orb

I unlocked the CPU by connecting all 4 L1 bridges using a pencil, and it seems to work, at least I could post at 750MHz and 850MHz. I tried 850MHz at first, but it couldn't reach Windows, nor 750MHz, not even at 1.75V. Does that mean that its actually already unlocked? Or does the system just show it?

Anyway, when I set it back to the default settings for 700MHz@1.65V, it still refused to get into Windows, except during Safe Mode. Everything seems to be in order in Safe Mode. What could be wrong?

Also, I keep getting an error that the Promise Ultra100 controller cannot detect any ATA100 drives, even though the Maxtor HDD is an ATA100 drive. This happens even after I installed the VIA drivers for the ATA100 controller. It shows up in Device Manager as a SCSI controller though. What's up with that? Is there something in BIOS I must set?

you could always try underclocking it. the ata/xxx controllers always show up as scsi, so that's fine. maybe the drive isn't set at ata/100? does the controller detect any drives? maybe go into the config and set it?

OK, the system is booting up fine at 700MHz now, it might be the videocard overclocking that caused that particular problem. However, still having that ATA100 problem...I was hoping someone with an ATA100 drive and an A7V, or someone who has specific experience with this setup can help me, but thanks for the help da loser :)

Edit: In the BIOS, there are settings for the UDMA mode, but its grayed out and unchangable. Its set at UDMA4, which is ATA66 to my knowledge. How can I change that? Or is there some program from Maxtor I must download to run it so that ATA100 is enabled?

Also, could anyone answer my question regardinghow I know if I've successfully unlocked the Duron?

Yeah I'm pretty sure. Its a DiamondMax Plus 45, the new 15GB/platter ones, not the older DiamondMax Plus 40s.

Have you installed the latest drivers for the Promise ATA100 controller?

You have to do the installation of the OS on the 66 controller, then install the Promise drivers, then move the drive to the 100 controller and if your lucky, all will be well.

Hmmn...its already currently in ATA66 mode. I've also installed the Promise ATA100 drivers which were included in the ASUS driver CD. I don't know if these are the latest drivers, but even if they're not, it should still work, shouldn't it?

Device manager shows the controller as a SCSI controller...and it seems to be installed properly(no exclamation marks)

Hmmn...ok this may be stupid but I've just thought of something. On the A7V there are 2 blue IDE connectors, I just assumed both of them were ATA100 channels, and installed it on the left one(viewed when the I/O panel is facing you). Is only 1 of them ATA100 while the other is ATA66?

Yes, there is one ATA 66 and one ATA 100. It sounds like you have the drive connected to the ATA 66 connector if I understand your orientation correctly.

the two ata/100 are on the left, just make sure you use the ata/66 cable because it won't work if you use the ata/33 cable. I have no idea why asus would not include two ata/66 cables.

OK, I'm looking at the picture of the A7V motherboard that is in the link that CRV posted. I have the HDD connected to the BLUE connector on the right, below the dip switches. Is this an ATA100 connector? If not, which ones are?

Which are the 2 ATA100 connectors and which are the 2 ATA66 ones? I thought they were color coded(blue = ATA100 and black = ATA66 or something).

Please refer to that image for orientation. Thanks!

Its connected to the wrong ones : )

The 2 controllers on the LEFT (not under the DIP switches) are both ATA 100. the 2 controllers under the dip switches are ATA66. it has nothign to do with the colors.

No offense, but have you ever tried looking in the A7V manual for this information? Its all clearly printed there.

Doh...thanks DOACleric...
When I installed the drive, I just assumed that blue was ATA100, since I had no experience with ATA100 and my other friend who was there to help install it too, say that blue was ATA100. I chose the right connectors so it didn't block the airflow coming in from the front of the case. I didn't really look at the manual, except for the dip switch settings for multiplier and the jumpers for the core voltage.

Since then, I don't have access to the manual since its my friend's system. Anyway, I'll ask him to do a switcheroo and see if it works.

Thanks again. This really is 1 of those "Doh" moments. :)
