Ok this might be a long post but here is is none-the-less.

If you are looking for a FAST and affordable solution the Epox motherboard and a Duron are really the way to go. ( I still prefer the KT7 at $140 though )
Here is a survey done at ixbt-labs on the duron cpu's
AMD Duron Overclocking. Part 2. [3:49 pm] Rat
Well, it?s high time we summed up our new overclocking achievements. Today we checked another portion of AMD Duron CPUs with different markings. We took not only 600MHz Durons but also faster ones for our tests. We tested the whole bunch of CPUs, a few pieces from each group.
The tests were run on the systems built with ASUS A7V and ABIT KT7, which allow changing the CPU clock multiplier. Again as usual, we unlocked all of them with the help of an ordinary pencil (by closing L1 golden bridges on the CPU surface). We increased the CPU voltage up to 1.85V and the cooling was arranged with a Chrome Orb cooler from Thermaltake. Here is what we got:
The charts below show the Cpu speed , the ID marking for each cpu , week of manufacter, and overclocking results.
Duron 600
AKAA0022MPMW 22 800-850MHz
AKAA0024DPBW 24 800-850MHz
AKAA0027BPAW 27 900-950MHz
AKBA0029TPAW 29 900-950MHz
AKBA0030EPIW 30 850-900MHz
AKBA0032EPAW 32 900-950MHz
AKBA0036APAW 36 1000-1050MHz
AKBA0036APBW 36 950-1000MHz
Duron 650
AKBA0026DPCW 26 900-950MHz
AKBA0032APEW 32 950-1000MHz
Duron 700
AKBA0038FPBW 38 1000-1050MHz
Duron 800
AKBA0037EPCW 37 1000-1050MHz
Judging by the results we obtained in our testlab, we can conclude that the overclockability does not depend on the working frequency of the CPU. The main factor that tells on the CPU ability to work at higher frequencies is the manufacturing date. The later is the CPU produced, the greater is the chance to succeed when overclocking it. However, the maximum frequency we managed to achieve now without extreme CPU cooling is only 1-1.05GHz. All the CPUs manufactured during the 36th week, which we tested, could get that fast independent of the marking on them.
So, if you are a dedicated overclocker we would recommend you to get an AMD Duron 600, however, unfortunately, AMD is about to stop shipping them in the nearest future, so you will have to lay yourself out trying to find them.
If you got interested in our overclocking experience and would like to help us collect information about AMD Duron overclocking, please, feel free to e-mail us at
info@ixbt-labs.com. Please, mention the nominal frequency of your processor and the marking (the second line on the core), the highest frequency you managed to overclock it to and a few details about your mainboard, Vcore and overclocking methods. Your participation is most welcome!
