I would to buy a duron for my new system

With which CPU ( Duron only ) I can achive the best OCing ...

I have a SUPER ORB and good cooling in my case

I will add some voltage to my CPU but not too much

Don't buy a duron, stick with the T-Bird, BTW my friend got his 750 to 1.1 Gigs, hehe.
You might wanna try and OC that baby a lil bit more, but Durons suck.

WTF are you smoking? Durons are freaking great! Pay $60 for a 1GHz cpu! Well I bought two Duron 700's and one reached 1GHz@1.85, the other is stuck at 900@1.8. Payed only $134 for both with shipping. Your best bet to hit 1GHz is a Duron 800 . They cost a litte more though. Not all chips are equal but the 800 seems the way to go to hit 1GHz.
 
Since we are all on the topic of durons, i thought id try and get help here. I just sold my dual celeron 500's and im looking to buy new stuff. Where i hit trouble was deciding which kind of chip to get. I was looking at a dual P3 800 system, but it was too expensive. Then i was looking at the T-Bird 1GHz, and it was a decent price. Now i find the Duron 1Ghz at the best price out of the 3. Why is it cheaper? I am putting some serious thought into buying it, but i want to know why its so cheap.

Well only way to attain a 1GHz Duron is by overclocking a 600,650,700,750,800 to 1GHz. And you are not guaranteed to hit 1GHz either. Best bet is the Duron 800. Reason it is so cheap is because the Duron has 1/2 the cache a Thunderbird has. If you really want 1GHz and better performance go with a 1Ghz T-Bird... can be had for under $200. I'm looking at getting one myself if I get a good refund this year 🙂
 
ok then how about this...i have a voodoo5 5500, 20gb@7200RPM, and 160mb of pc133ram. i know that isnt the best computer in the world, but will it make up for the lack of cache on a duron as opposed to the t-bird? what exactly does the onboard cache do for you?
 
Well you get more for your money with a Duron. The Duron is very fast... T-Birds are about 10-15% faster than (Duron 800 equals around 90% of a T-Bird 800's performance for a lot less money). A duron has less L2 cache then a T-bird (128 instead of 256). I am essentialy talking about memory cache (L1, L2) which resides on the cpu... you will notice almost no difference, except in programs/apps/games etc. in which utilize the cpu's l2 cache.
 
depends on what you are doing with your box too. If you're not hardcore, a duron at 950-1000 is a superb deal. Don't expect all the durons to hit 1000 or 950 even. They don't.

A Duron 950 is as fast as a tbird 850 nowadays. A Duron 1000 is a little bit slower than a tbird 900 🙂

oh yeah: i just did some sisoft sandra benches on this system
my system scored higher that the &quot;athlon 1ghz&quot; comparison system in the cpu test.. this is a slot-a k75 athlon i'm guessing, but not too shabby
 
Why pay more for a Duron 800 when a Duron 600 overclocks around the same as the 800? I tried 5 Duron 600's and they all hit 950mhz with the retail heatsink.

one more thing...it seems the duron is extremely easy to OC. is the
T-Bird just as easily OC'ed? if so, i think im gonna stick with T-Bird for the slight performance increase. some info would be nice, thanks.
 
Well I've tired 3 Duron 700 and only one is stable at 1GHz... one is stable at 900MHz and the last one can hit 900MHz but isnt stable (leave it at 875). Like I said the Duron 800 is the best bet to hit 1GHz... I'm 1 for 3 outta my Duron 700's.
 
Facts:
Duron L1 cache = 128kb
Duron L2 cache = 64kb
Tbird L1 cahce = 128kb
Tbrid L2 cache = 256kb

So basically the Duron is a Tbird - 192kb cache.
Does it make that much of a difference?
Depends.

With my system in my sig, I pull off almost 4800 3dmarks, running the default bench.
Don't forget 3dmark2k is optimized for geforces.
In CS, I pull off a constant 100fps @ 1024/32bit.
I crunch seti @ home WU's in about 5.5 hours, and pull off over 3.33mkeys/sec in RC5.
For a chip that costs $50....that's not shabby at all.

Duron = Budget performer
Tbird = All out performer

Take your pick.

My recommendation: Look at the week of the processor, get the latest possible (IE: Pick a week 40 over a week 30)
It'll overclock better.
 
Wow Viperoni! I guess Radeons do kick ass. My FPS in Counter-Strike is 99... but can fall to 40 in heavy battles.

Anyway... if you got money to spend get a T-Bird. Don't, get a Duron. Feel good that you saved money for near top notch performance.
 
I'm not really sure which duron you should get now, but i'd have to say get anything as low speed as possible to overclock. From reading on this board, everybody is getting great results overall with oc'ing the 600-700. I'd go with the lowest speed one ya can find around. With my duron 600, i could hit 1000 by 10x100 no prob at 1.75v. But i found that the best combo was 107x 9, which gave me 963, but only needed 1.625v, and ran very cold. I didn't plan on going any further, until today when i recieved my thermistor, to check to see if my mobo was in fact reading generally the right temp. I found out that my kt7-raid, with the bios wt was reading almost the exact same as the thermistor was touching the edge of the core. So now i have my duron 600 to 1080, running about 40 idle, 108x10, a 1.85v, and i'm not worried about the temps cause they aren't very high for me, just got lucky.

All in all, go with a 600 IF you can find one anymore, they're cheap, and seem to have had the best luck ocing.

*NEWBIE QUESTION*
Well, I was looking around alienware for a game pc since i've heard pretty good things about them from a couple of my friends(and i like that case =)). Well, on thier budget sys, The Grey, you get a choice of either a 866 PIII or a 700 Duron. The PIII a bit faster and more expensive, but from what i've heard here durons can be greatly overclocked. Which one would be better? I'm kinda new at this too... my uncle just showed me this last week.

Firstly, if you wanted to overclock the P3, you shouldn't be going for a 133MHz FSB chip. The Duron is a no-brainer overclock. Just need to get those L1 bridges closed and a motherboard that allows multiplier tweaking. In any case, I'd highly recommend the AMD chip, Duron OR T-Bird. They're both great!
 
Duron's performance is nearly the T-Bird's
Even my Duron 600@850 beat the T-bird 700@824 on 3Dmark2000 on the same ABIT KT-7 mobo

Good... especially with it's price
 
I bought my Duron 800 at $82.95 including shipping. Not a bad price for a gigahertz processor. The reason i did not buy a T-bird is because of the higher price, and the fact that it creates more heat. Heating is less of a problem with the Duron than with the T-bird. or so i've heard.
 
I've heard a lot about &quot;closing the L1 bridges&quot; but I have no clue what you guys are talking about..hehe (i'm also a newbie). How do you close these L1 bridges, and what do most people do with this pencil stuff, something about penciling their cpu?

(i don't have a duron but i'm intrested in buying one, also learning about ocing)

retail Duron 600 week 29/31's seem to yeild the best results. retail 700's seem to be hitting 900 and higher as well. I have a week 29 retail Duron 600 currently at 1030 MHz (103 x 10) at 1.85 volts on my Asus A7V.
 
JoPalm - do a search for L1 bridges.. ive come across some threads with pictures on closing them. theres even an article here at anandtech about closing them.
 
i'm running a Duron 700@850 (1.7V)
Temperature idle 34 Celsius stressed 39 celsius 😀

The only problem i have is that my PSU isn't powerfull enough to go any higher
BUT when i get my 300 Watt PSU i'm sure that'll be able to hit the 1Ghz
No problemo!!! 🙂

And for sure: The Duron is one of the best OC-able CPU's ever.
Thunderbirds CAN also be OC quite a bit but the (1)higher temperatures of the core and (2) the L2 cache can be a problem.
