duron from Googlegear has bent pins!

I was trying to put my new processor from Googlegear in the socket, and it wouldn't fall in. I'm pretty sure I'm lining it up correctly (45 degree notch is by the lever , etc.). I looked at the pins, and two or three of them appear bent. What should I do? Should I try positioning them myself? Or is that risky?

Perhaps I can RMA to Googlegear?
 
Think they might break? Guess I"ll have to be careful.

I took a look at it again, and it looks like there is actually more like 6 or 7 that are bent. Is there a general threshold for RMA'ing?
 
Ooohh...I wouldn't straighten that out. RMA it, and get a better processor 😉 You can a 1600+ for virtually the same price these days
 
Same thing happened to me with an 1800+, I wasn't sure if they would bend or if they would break, but I took the risk anyway and got them into position and it worked fine ever since. Just be careful and it should be fine.

tbates757 - Did you use needlenose pliers too?
 
You can safely straighten out those pins. They dont break THAT easily. You should be able to straighten them out with a flat head screwdriver+your fingers combo if you dont have a needlenose plier. I do that all the time at work cuz we do get bent pins on CPU straight from vendors.

my friend got one with bent pins also, I straightened them out for him (maybe 4 or 5 bent ones). Just use needle nosed pliers (gently) and finger nails, if you have 'em 😉 Are the pins made out of copper, or something? They're pretty flexible, and they won't break exceptionally easily, unless you go all the way bending it back and forth a lot...but otherwise, to straighten it, you'll be fine.
 
A thin knife blade (ie razor) works fairly well since it allows you to adjust an entire row simultaneously.

I've rescued some severely mangled 386/486 class CPUs, but since the advent of the ZIF socket I haven't had to do anything like that.

I think I'm going to take the risk and straighten it myself.

I have to say I'm disappointed with the way Googlegear packed the processor. Newegg does a much better job. The one I ordered from them was placed in some sort of "sponge" so the pins didn't bend.

mine from newegg wasn't in foam and i had 2 bent pins,but a flat screwdriver fixes em right up. if there is quite a few in a row a razorblade or sharp knife works well to straighten rows of them.i use this myself Viper GTS lol

this is fairly common and shouldn't be a problem but can be worrisome for a first time lol

Is the only way to ensure you don't get a processor with bent pins is if you buy a retail packaged processor? It just seems like nobody takes any care in properly handling and packing a CPU for shipment anymore. I do a lot of my computer work late at night. The last thing I'd want to encounter at 11:00 P.M. on a Saturday night is some bent pins that I couldn't straighten out. 🙁

my last two were retail both had bent pins
 
Unfortunately even newegg has sent me processors with bent pins. All you got to do is carefully bend them back until they fit in the socket. After that the socket will correct the bent pins. You may never need to take the processor out of the socket anyways.
 
Use a credit card or driver's license. Works wonders for straightening bent pins and takes care of the entire row in one shot.

Okay,

I'm about to get started. Quick question. If I use a flat-head screw driver, I'm a little worried that I may push to hard or something and go past the pin and scratch the bottom of the cpu. Should I worry about small nics or scratches on the bottom?

Use the credit card/license techfuzz suggested, you can't hurt much that way 🙂
 
I use the tip of a mechanical pencil to straighten individual pins. Works great and no scratches on the chip or the pins.
 
It doesn't really matter what you use as long as your are careful. If you straighten the pin slowly it won't break. Take your time and the cpu will be fine.
 
what is it about 1.3 durons from googlegear, i also had one with a bent pin, only proc. i've ever had with bent pins. not a big deal to fix it, just thought it weird to hear of multiple durons with bent pins from googlegear....
