hey... there's another barebones combo that may be of interest... link

not sure what brand mb it has... but it's for sure 266 fsb so u can upgrade to athlon xp in the future. (i wasn't sure sure if the soyo one was since it's listed as 200 but some ppl said it was 266). it also has BOXED athlon 1.3 Ghz.

The boxed 1.3 is listed at newegg for $119. The ecs mb is $57, so that's a total of 176 there for just the cpu and mb. then it's 53 bucks for all the rest:

AMD Athlon 1.3GHz Boxed CPU @ 266MHz FSB
Via KLE Chipset with Socket A Interface
2 Dimms slots for up to 1GB of PC-133 Memory
Built in 2D/3D Video
2 PCI; 1 ISA; 1 AMR Slots
4 x 5.25" External Bays & 2 X3.5" Internal Bays
1.44MB Floppy Drive
56k V.90 Fax Modem
3D Sound with Wavetable
10-100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Card
UDMA/100 Hard Drive Controller

I duno... it's not HOT, but it's something to think about if you wanna build a system. worth taking a look at since they raised the soyo barebones to 179 too. what u guys think?

cool thanks for sharing ckmoocow.. Time for a lil' upgrading. but hmmm, AMR slot not AGP? isn't AMR for like modems, and isn't that
pretty much becoming ancient? Guess I'll do some more looking, need athlon power -- tired of my durons :)

i called up outpost to get more info about this mb... but they couldn't really tell me anything. i also coudn't find any ecs mb with a via kle133 chipset, so i checked the via website. here are the VIA KLE133 chipset chipset specs. no support for ddr ram :( pc66/100/133 only.

question: how much of a performance gain does ddr ram give over regular sd ram?
question2: should i cancel the soyo barebones and get this one instead? it would cost me 80 bucks more... or should i just cancel ths soyo and buy parts separately?

thanks.

limax you are not totally correct. as i noted on the other thread, a similar deal is back. this product at the link here is still $179. there is a link for something similar at $149 but I don't think the motherboards are the same.

The $149.00 Deal doesn't look so bad..

AMD Duron 950MHz Boxed CPU
Built in 2D/3D Video
1.44MB Floppy Drive
Keyboard, mouse & speakers included
*Just install the CPU, your drives and memory to build your own system

Looks to be a Soyo SY-K7VEM+ motherboard based on their description:

Supports Socket A Duron/Thunderbird/XP Processors
Supports 200/266MHz FSB
Supports UDMA 66/100 IDE Devices
Via KLE133/686B chipset based Micro-ATX Motherboard

I have a question for anyone with the SY-K7VEM+ board or that has one similar, the Chipset embedded Trident Blade 3D AGP doesn't have a memory size listed on soyo's website.. I have seen others (ie: Biostar) that have this as well and only have 8MB Ram... Is that the case with this one?? or is it shared wih the system RAM?

They Charged $7.47 for Airborne 2nd Day shipping....

Thanks..

Hey Y'all---- :) :)

I just received 2 of these Duron 950 barebones systems and was pleased to find that they are now shipped with the Soyo K7VEM Pro motherboard. This addition of the RealTek lan chipset/port was an added bonus for a board that already has on-board video and sound. I haven't put it together yet, but I'm pretty sure that the video is 8 meg. AC97 audio codec. Gameport. Supports AMD Duron, Athlon, and XP. 200/266 bus. It has 2 SDram slots for PC100/133 SDram.

This comes with a floppy drive (Panasonic), 300 watt (yeh---sure) ATX 2.01 power supply made by Maxpower, an inexpensively made, but serviceable, mid-tower case that will hold a full size atx board if someone wanted to cannibalize and swap stuff around. 7 knockouts. The PSU mounts to the left side---not the top---so it is one of those "remove the power supply first" types when it comes to doing anything around the cpu area. They include a ATA 100 ide drive cable for your hard drive and cdrom, small bag of screws, and a plastic bag of thermal grease!

Additionally it comes with a Windows 2000 keyboard (ps/2) that has more damned buttons at the top row than anything I've ever seen (21 HotKeys !!!!), a Soyo branded p/s2 scrolling mouse, and a pair of el-cheapo plastic amplified speakers that still sound better than the $7.95 CompGeeks PMPO's we detest and give away to the first person that needs something that squawks.

The retail boxed Duron 950 is for real. Shrinkwrapped and fresh.

This is, all in all, quite a lot of stuff for not much(~$156), shipped, and is still available at Outpost. (I know---just hope you don't have any RMA issues!)

So for those of you with kids/girlfriends/parents/grandparents/charity and a spare cd-rom, memory, and hard drive this is tops in my book right now.
I built one similiar to this for a friend around Christmas using the SY-K7VEM barebones that Outpost had on sale then and it was a screaming little machine for the bucks. This one has more for the same cash!

Just thought this good deal posted by KofC should be refreshed with the latest from someone that took the plunge.
"Lovin' every minute of it!!" :D

Tax to CA, AZ and TX because Fry's has a physical presence in those states.

I got this barebones kit and put together the computer last night. I encountered a small problem though. When I power on the computer, it beeps once continuously and then shuts down after after about 5 seconds. Nothing comes on the screen. However, when I power the computer on while pressing the insert button on the keyboard, the computer boots normally without any problems. The soyo manual says that a continuously beep is a problem with the memory not being seated properly but I repeatedly repositioned the sticks of ram and Windows reads it fine. How do I power on the computer without having to press the insert key every time? I hope some of you out there will be able to help me.

Sweet, Thanks for the info..

Mine just got delivered according to Airborne Tracking!! I can't wait to get home and see if it has the K7VEM Pro!!! BTW: does it look like the CPU requires a Low Profile Heatsink???

Rob,

I had the same problem with the computer beeping and shutting off as you have. It is caused by the FOC (Fan off Control) function of the motherboard. It is explained on the bottom of page 9 iand page 10 in the manual. I had to go into the BIOS and disable the FOC to get the board to work. Apparently the supplied fan is not giving the motherboard the proper signal causing the motherboard to shut off.

I Just got done setting mine up.. I also received the Soyo K7VEM Pro. It is a nice package. I agree with jimstone 100%. Comes complete and assembled. Just had to throw in CD-Rom, Hard Disk, RAM and CPU. Booted right up no troubles. It won't be a rocking Gaming Machine but, for a low buck solution for my sister in Law it's perfect.

I'd buy another.

Thanks a lot Wally. I didn't know how to turn off the FOC setting in the bios but after reading the manual a little more, I learned I pluged the heatsink fan in the wrong motherboard header. Guess I should've read the manual while I was installing.

Thats for a Duron 950 and a AS-121 barbones. There is no mention that it comes with the floppy, keyboard, mouse, speakers or what Mobo it is. The duron 950 w. AS-323 was a great deal @ $149.00 it came with floppy, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and Soyo K7VEMPRO Motherboard with onboard video... and shipping was $7.47...
