Duron 700 mystery

I bought a locked Duron 700 on sat along with an A7V. I set the motherboard up for 700MHz in jumper mode. The thing booted at 750. I checked the bridges on the chip against the tom's hardwear artical...they matched a 700.

Now, when a chip is locked, setting the multipler on the motherboard should have no effect. Yet when I set the multipler dip switches to 7.0 or anything lower, it refuses to boot. Anthing over 7.0, it boots at 750.

I've thought about trying to unlock the chip, and see where that takes me, but I don't want to void the warrenty if I need to take something back...be it the mb or the duron. I have until sat. to decide.

As long as you are careful with the pencil, I don't think that anyone will be able to tell if you unlocked it if you erased the lines. I erased them on my T-Bird once due to overlapping lines, and it looked fine.

okay, I tried...it wouldn't boot with anything but the 7.5 multipler.

I don't even know what I should take back, the cpu or the mb.

There are two things that I suggest you take a look at. The first thing is make sure that the tow DIP switched 5 and 6 on the multiplier block are both on. If they are not on, the multiplier adjustment will not work properly. The other thing is make extra sure that the bridges are connected, but isolated from one another. What I mean is that although you want to connect the bridges, you do not want any of the connections to overlap. furthermore (I doubt you did this but just in case) you shouldn't be putting thermal grease on top of the bridges, especially if the grease is conductive.

Another note, have you tried doing the multiplier setting with jumperfree mode on? I personally prefer offm but if you are experiencing problems, you may want to try turning it on to see what happens. The Multiplier DIPs still work under JumperFree mode.

5 and 6 have always been on. I also was carefull to have space between my markings. No thermal grease has been used yet...I've just been useing the pad that came with the stock hsf untill I purchaced an aftermarket one.

I don't even know what part to take back; The cpu is locked, so the mb couldn't be overclocking it (right?), and yet the mutiplers on the mb seam to be acting screwy.

One thing that comes to mind is that on of the dots on the L1 bridges is extreamly small. I don't see how that would really effect anything, but you never know.

How about disabling dip switches 5 and 6 and letting the MB read the CPUFID? It should boot up at 700Mhz.

Hey man, did you get this figured out? Sounds just like my problem with a Duron 700 and A7V. Pencil trick didnt do anything and Ive retraced 3 times and get irregular readings from the dip switches.
