Duron 600@800, is 81C too hot?

Just wondering, this chip is supposed to run at 1GHz, but it's a no-go, doesn't even post. I have PAL6035 (or something like that) cooler and using MSI KT7 Turbo.
 
81C uhm make sure ur heatsink is making proper contact with the cpu.

also make sure ur using thermal grease.. and if you are using a thermal pad, make sure the plastic is removed.

the spec for durons and tbirds are 90C

and since the temperature monitor for the socket A's usually underestimates the temp, I'd wager you are way above spec.

check the clip pressure is it attaching the sink on tightly to the cpu?

and for god sakes dont run ur chip overclocked till u bring ur temps down quite a bit!

What is your mb/system temp?

For an MSI board, those reading temps should fry your cpu. What heatsink do you have?

haha mike: sounds like something that happened in my dorms,

some dude in my hall wasnt using any thermal interface material on his duron 600, then for the last month his cpu lived he switched to some weak ass heatsink that didnt even have enough clip pressure to push down the rubber pads on the duron.

when i examined his dead duron, it had absolutely no marks on it, as if it had come new out of the store. i doubt a heatsink ever made any contact on it.
 
Umm, is it really that serious, I guess I will clock it down. I am using Alpha 6035 (or some numbers close to that) and I do have some thermal paste down there. Heatsink seems to fit pretty well on the Duron. I guess I can always try that Arctic Silver II I just got today... I'll let you know the temperatures after clocking it down.
 
if u cant get a good view of ur chip, tkae the motherboard out of the case and sit it flat on a table and see how the connection/or lack of connection is. also make sure u plug in your heatsink fan too (just incase u forgot) 😛
 
OK, I clocked it down to 600MHz and default voltage and BIOS shows 68C. Better now? System temperature is 26C. Maybe the probe is faulty and shows too high temperatures?
 
here is a quick and dirty way of testing if heatsink pressure isnt high enough..

crank her up at 600, let her run for a bit to stabalize at (60c?)
then, carefully (watch ur fingers) push down on ur heatsink gently, see if it can squish down some, continue applying pressure and wathc ur motherboard monitor/temp monitor.. see if the temps drop (id say do this for a few mins as the change in temps wont happen immediately)

if the temperature goes down, perhaps ur clip isnt tight enough (i had this problem with an old all aluminum alpha that had a socket 370 clip that was a bit streched out.

frastini, I tried your suggestion and I pressed down on the heatsink for a minute and the temperature dropped only by 1C. I put the heatsink together myself, and I am not sure if I put it together OK, is there any picture I could take a look at and compare? No plastic feet for my Alpha, though I got something that looked like those four things (feet) on the Duron. Was I supposed to put those on the heatsink?
 
hmm very odd, what kind of fan are do you have on the alpha?

make sure that the clip is applying pressure directly over the core..

try taking the heatsink off as well, check to see of the core has made
an impression in the thermal compound.

one of my friends had his taisol 742 backwards, and only half the cpu was in contact with the thermal interface material.. not sure if it is the same in this case but who knows.

just some ideas 😛
 
I remember reading something along these lines, with a person with a Duron and a Alpha Pal. The guy put it on BACKWARDS and when he put it the right way, it was like in hte 30's. Make sure it is on the RIGHT way.
 
81C...damn... that is definitely scorching... my overclocked tbird is at 45C at full load...
check the contact between your heatsink and cpu core
 
Umm, I am a moron! I'd rather NOT tell you what I did, but here it goes anyway for your amusement. Not only the off-center clip was NOT directly over the core of the chip, but I also put the FAN on backwards!!! So it was sending the heat TO the CPU instead of from. I don't know what I was smoking when I was putting it together. BTW, after a round of 3DMark2000, my temperature is at 39C. Damn, 30C difference, wow!

Hmm....my heatsink fan blows down at the heatsink/cpu, thats the way it came. My temps never go above 44C on my system. So you reversed your fan to blow away from the heatsink/cpu and got that kind of drop? I think you just had your heatsink askew to begin with.
 
I'd have to agree with killrose; ive heard of around a 2-3 degree C difference in the "blow" vs. "suck" configuration (probably more to do with the case layout than anything else)...(religious wars mostly)...

So either your fan wasnt rotating because it was hung up on the HS (doubt it, not with a 6035 and its air duct/shroud), the fan wasnt plugged in or working otherwise, or there was next to no contact with the core...

Things are better now, so thats good, whatever happened!

another mystery solved 😛

also with alphas, fan blowing at or away from heatsink usually doesnt generate too much performance difference, they are however designed to have the fan sucking air from heatsink and blowing it away.

gl with overclocking now 😛
