Duron 1000 & 1.2 OC Results

I have a Duron 1Ghz and I just ran the RedStorm overclocking on my Soltek board and it rebooted at 1.13Ghz. I'm sure I could go higher if I configured it manually and boosted the voltage but not worth the trouble... 13% is good enough for me currently.

Real world perceptions-wise, this Duron runs my apps about the same as the XP 1600+ and Athlon 1.33Ghz I had in it previously...

Just a side note, XP Pro is running fine w/o reinstalling after doing all these CPU swaps. I guess they're all similiar enough.
 
Are there many people getting to 133 fsb with the duron 1Ghz? I'm thinking of buying one for a cheap rig. I've heard some people easily get it up to 1.3, so what stepping, core are you using? I'm dying to know, cooling too.
 
I'm doing 11x113 currently. I guess I'd have to boost the voltage to get anywhere close to 133. I'm using a SK6 and a low-noise 80mm Panaflo. Temps get up to 39C running Seti...

Don't know what stepping it is and don't plan to pull it anytime soon but if I do, I'll post it.
 
Don't think you'll find anyone (who's honest) getting anywhere near 133. Dejansen is doing better than darn good with 113.
 
I wonder if 9 x 133 (1197) wouldn't be better than 11 x 113 (1243) ... . If only there was an easy way to change the multiplier on a K7S5A -- no way am I permanently severing or connecting those bridges, but I'd gladly take a pencil to them if the bios allowed multiplier changes. :frown:
 
I thought there was a new overclocking BIOS out for the K7S5A...

Why would 9x133 be better? More bandwidth to reduce the CPU wait? I could give it a try but the difference would probably not be perceptible and I'm not one of those benchmarking freaks. 🙂 Too busy with other things than to take screenshots of my latest SANDRA accomplishment.

Normal(means no special overclockers) Morgan Duron owners run from 133mhz FSB- 205.57mhz FSB. Read again.. one of the guys doing 205.57mhz FSB(that's.... 411mhz of DDR) on simple air cooling, using Thermalright AX7(28 bucks) w/ CPU temp of 30C.

You don't lower the multi, you ain't going no where upping that FSB, no way, period..

And you can't do that on a $hitty mobo either.. Minimal requirement: Epox 8KHA+, Epox 8K3A+, Iwill XP333, Abit KR7A, or equivalent. Some people do 150fsb's.. some do 160fsb's.. some do 178fsb's.. EASY.
Don't even think about doing it on the KT7 series..

He means you have to lower the multi to up the FSB I believe...

Did you read what's in the links? Read every one of them, then tell if they did use default voltage or not. Read first, buddy(I know you didn't even read).
 
Ok, Milk. I will read them. And then be on my way. This is all getting too heated over some silly Duron overclocking. We were just wondering and sharing. Thanks for the links. You rule.
 
I've got a Shuttle AK31a mobo ("$hitty" I suppose as a refurb at Newegg is only $57). I don't recall how much I could overclock on the default voltage (1.75V), but with CPU @ 1.90V I can reach 1240Mhz (8x154, 8.5x146, or 9x138), at 1.94V I can reach 8x156 or 9x140 and at 2.1V I get 9x142. As you can see, I had no trouble getting a very high FSB and the CPU pretty much maxed at 1240Mhz, since adding 0.2V only improved it by 40Mhz. Actually, the AK31a only allows CPU @ 1.85V but I'd guess I could probably get 1200 at that (did a volt mod to increase the voltage further).

My Sandra memory scores at 8x156 are about 10% worse than what I got with a 1700+ at 10x158 on the same mobo (probably the small cache on the Duron), and my 1700+@10x158 had CPU scores about 30% higher than the Duron at 8x156 (as you'd expect).

So you can see that I got almost identical FSB out of the Duron 1gig and the XP1700+.

You can see my complete rig below, just substitute the Duron 1gig for the Athlon listed in the stats.

So you basically got the same overall Mhz as I did with default voltage... Is there any *perceptible* advantage in a higher FSB?
 
For the applications I use I doubt there is any perceptible difference between Timmers Duron 600, my Duron 1000, and my old XP 1700+. If you're running SETI@Home then you'll want the higher FSB because there's a lot of memory access involved, otherwise it probably doesn't matter much. But if you're picking between 8x154 and 9x138 then you should pick the higher FSB as it certainly won't perform any worse.

Actually Anandtech has an article remarking that 133 & 166FSB have minimal difference in performance at current CPU speeds, and hence Thoroughbred probably will run as a Socket A CPU at 133.

I can run mine at a FSB of 133MHz+ with no stability problems as long as the total speed doesn't excedes 1215MHz.
 
I am running my Morgan 1ghz Duron at 8x145=1168mhz. I can run it at 8x150 but the FSB being so high makes the system unstable. I can run it at 12x100 too, but the 8x145 is much faster even though it is 32mhz slower. I am using an Abit KT7A
 
I'm interested in your decision to spend the money for a CPU Abit says, in every way possible, the KT7A won't support. What made you decide, and which bios are you using?
 
Gotey, I am curious in what way you find the higher FSB to be "much faster"? I don't run anything terribly intense on my computer so I'm curious in what sort of apps there will be such a noticable improvement. I'm running my Duron at 8x156, so in theory I should be doing good if I run the right sort of things.
