durian

Lifer
so i am going to try durian tonight for the first time. has anyone eaten durian before?

from the wiki:

"... its odor is best described as pig-sh1t, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away."

Haha - I like the subway sign that specifically prohibits them, along with smoking and flammable goods.

I'm an avid fan of both Food Network and Travel Channel. Chef/Critic/Author Andrew Zimmern tried durian on the first iteration of his show "Bizarre Foods" and said it was without question the single most disgusting thing he'd ever eaten...and that's saying a lot considering he's eaten some really nasty looking sh!t.

Anthony Bourdain, another chef/author/food personality tried it this year on his show "No Reservations" and he seemed to absolutely adore it.

It sounds disgusting. Make sure you update after the fact!

i saw that episode of no reservations. i am surprised that andrew zimmern found it so disgusting considering the fowl things he eats, like baluga. it just so happened a friend invited me over for durian a few days after i saw the no reservations episode so i am stoked.

basically you either love it or hate it. having worked in a restaurant for many years, initially i just could not stand the smell. but after a couple years it grew on me, i ate some, and it r0x0rz j00r b0x0rz

Ive tried it before, it tastes a lot better then it smells. but it still stinks to high hell and the smell lasts a lot longer then the taste.

My sister got one once to try it out, it was so foul tasting I cannot describe it. It was in her fridge a few days before she worked up the nerve to taste it and it made all the food in her fridge taste like it.

Run, keep running and don't look back.

ive been around it my whole life, but have never tasted it. My family eats it every once in a while but ive never had the balls to give it a try... i just cant stand the smell

I'd like to try it but I have no idea where to find one. And if I do find one, how do I know if it's "ripe", although I guess it always smells "ripe" 😀

I was amazed he couldn't eat it as well.

I've actually never smelled or tried it. I always pass places in Chinatown selling it, and want ot buy one, but am afraid of my gf killing me for opening it in our apartment. 😛

I love it. I eat it all the time with my family. The smell is an acquired tasted I guess you can say. Once you get used to the smell you can tell when you get a nice ripe one.

I love that in both those TV shows I was talking about, they have signs around the city and in public places prohibiting people from eating durian b/c of the stank. LOL. It must be pretty pungent.

I love it.
You can find it at most Asian markets.
Even if they don't have the fresh ones, they have the frozen prepackaged for like $5.

Depends on how you're raised, those of us that grew up with it finds the aroma to be anything but disgusting. But then again, we're worlds apart.
