Duplicity in the media

What's the difference between Rush Limbaugh saying:
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.
(obviously an unwarranted race-based comment)
and Bryant Gumbel saying:
So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world?s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.
(another obviously unwarranted comment)?

Where's the outrage and the demand for Gumbel to resign? Why is one comment so racially insensitive while the other isn't?

* I think both statements are ignorant, BTW.

The McNabb comment was a slap against a black person stating that they may hve been unqualified on only in that position because of their color.

The other was a statement that there are few blacks in the Olympics - not that they are unqualified to be there.

It is the addemdum with the GOP that was uncalled for and is just a slap at politics.

Even though it was accurate.

Are you saying that Limbaugh's or Gumball's (SIC I did this intentionally) statement is accurate?

If Limbaugh's, McNabb has had a couple of the greatest season's, statistically, of any quarterback in the history of the league. Sounds like, black or not, he is qualified for that job.

As to the Gumball quote, I'd like to see a link to the original so that I can see context. Not that I don't trust you to not pull things out of context Fuzzy....but I don't trust that your source might not be some "slightly right-leaning" blog that is taking the quote out of context.

It's kind of funny if you ask me, a GOP convention, LOL!

The winter olympics does have the worlds best athletes in their sports and Bryant knows it. Maybe black people just don't like the cold? Maybe being out in the cold makes them do and say stupid things? ;)

Agreed - very few blacks participate actively in the GOP showcases. I have no idea what the percentage of blacks are with respect to political percentage.
Low but one also should look at the economic levels of the breakdown.

I love how the GOP convention has like four black people there but the camera manages to find one every 30 seconds for a close up, maybe the Olympics can try a similar tactic?

Perhaps the Olympic diversity thing is more related to social economic classes...? Winter sports are expensive...the richer classes in this country are less diverse...?

Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don?t care about them and won?t watch them. In fact, I figure that when Thomas Paine said that ?these are the times that try men?s souls,? he must?ve been talking about the start of another Winter Olympics. Because they?re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world?s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the winter games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something?s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what?s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won. And try to blot out all logic when announcers and sportswriters pretend to care about the luge, the skeleton, the biathlon and all those other events they don?t understand and totally ignore for all but three weeks every four years. Face it ? these Olympics are little more than a marketing plan to fill space and sell time during the dreary days of February. So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they?re done, when we can move on to March Madness ? for God?s sake, let the games begin.

Perhaps? Then again maybe it just doen't pay well enough to attract black athletes. What would you rather have, a gold medal in a winter sport, or make 5 million a year as a basketball player.

I'd say both the Winter and the Summer Olympic run the gamut of costs; skating, for instance, is a vital part of the Winter games, and a lot of those athletes are normally in-line skaters.

Ok Fuzzy.....

You are decrying that an "uproar" should occur over what someone says on a paid cable network because of the racist comments of a political pundant that you agree with made on a channel that is pumped into every household that gets basic cable or beyond? Is that your argument?

I will do my part to appease you then. That Gumbel needs to be taken off of regular tv. If he wants to spout opinions like that, let him do it where the only people that can hear it are those that choose to turn it on and pay to hear it !! Oh wait...that is what happened. :disgust:

I don't think that has anything to do with it. Ethiopian marathoners aren't making $5 mil a year but they always seem to clean up in certain events. I think it's just a matter of geography and population densities. How many African or Carribbean countries participate in winter sports? Traditionally, none of them do. What is the percentage of black people in the population at large in the traditional Winter Olympic powerhouse countries like Finnland, Austria, Canada, etc?

It doesn't take a genuis to figure it out. And Gumbel is an idiot for (A) complaining about it and (B) trying to make a completely baseless political statement.

In your first sentence, you show the ignorance of your assumptions. When will you people here stop stating assumptions about other posters as facts? (Please note the original post as to my opinion on the matter.)

I need no appeasing from you. It does appear, though, that you have no issue with Gumbel's statement; at least, if you do, you are afraid to state it here.

I took his comments as pertaining to the US athletes, since he compared it to the GOP party?? In any case, it was a stupid comment on his part.

What I have an issue with is the attitude of feigned outrage by people that don't realize context and forum.

Rush makes a racist remark about an athlete during a pre-game program that is on the air to break down the games. It isn't supposed to be a show that gives HIS societal opinions.

Gumbel makes a racist remark about a lack of athletes at a certain event during an OPINION SEGMENT on a show which he was hired to state his opinions of sporting events and athletes. It IS supposed to be a show that gives HIS societal opinions.

That is what I have a problem with and I am not afraid to state it here are anywhere else.

Ahhh... I took Gumbel's comments to be about the olympics in general, not just the US contingent:
So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world?s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the winter games look like a GOP convention.
His slap at the GOP as just part of his own political bias. I will also point out the insuination that a white person can't be considered one of the greatest athletes in the world. Everyone at these games, regardles of their race, is elite at what they do.

Gumbel was just letting his ignorance and racism out of the closet for a bit.

I don't think he excluded whites from being in the category of worlds greatest atheletes. He was saying that part of the collection was missing... and his fat ignorance is hopefully all that was showing..

Don't go overboard.. he or she was saying you like Limbaugh so his comments wouldn't offend you or stick out as much.. He didn't say you agree with his fat racist hypocritical views... just that in general you like him and his love party so you will defend him more.

You are correct. I stated something that was either incorrect or cannot verify from the posts of yours that I have read to this point. I apologize for including you in the comment. The accusation about Rush stands however.

How can it be evidence of his political bias when its a fact the GOP gets ~9% of the african american vote? Not that Gumbel would know anything about that at.
